To choose a world
Let's say that I, as a slumming god-on-leave, was to grant you the ability to start a novice character in an appropriate profession in a universe upon which any given fantasy CRPG was based. (Oh, you didn't know that CRPGs are actually brought to mind from other dimensions, where they already exist? Well, forget I said anything about it.) Which game envirionment and what profession would you choose? A novice sorcerer in BG2? A samurai in Wizardry 8?
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

A Half-Elven Bard living with her girlfriend(a Half-Elven Fighter/Mage) in either Easthaven, Waterdeep, or Silverymoon; not that they spend all their time at home.

Morlock,(half elven Mage lvl. 42) of course, needs no introduction for this legendery mage, who could beat the best fighter with his renowned home made spell "slayer of everything",who could contorol an army of illthids minds, who could slay dragons with his sling (The deathseeker +9)- which is, of course, home made, the savior of Waterdeep, the destroyer of the zhentarum, the eradicater of demons, the slayer of Lolth, the controller of Crenshinibon, the.....

Ahem, um, sorta got ahead of myself here.
What I meant to say was:
Morlock, the Egotistic and charming young mage from Luskan, currently waiting tables
and on the side he is looking into being the most powerful mage that ever lived.

Honestly, I would have wanted to be a samurai who would begin his training in bushido under the guidance of the greatest samurai ever --- the Samurai Saint.

Hey!
No level 42 anythings, no rich young anythings. You start as a typical novice of your choice of profession appropriate to that world. Them's the rules for stating what you'd be.

I would be a Human Fighter living in Luskan, ready for trips into the Spine of the World mountains and treasure! With Boots of Speed to run away if things got too dangerous!
Chewbacca - "Rwaaarn!"
Han Solo - "You said it Chewie!"
Azim - "No one controls my destiny, at least not one who attacks downwind and smelling of garlic"

@Fable- What I said would be the ideal,
but as a novice, I guess a mage (almost) anywhere. With preference that that life includes Entreri,Lavalle (As I've said numerous times before,I'm a huge Salvatore fan)or the shadow theives- I love Assasins.

I would have trouble choosing the world...but as I'm playing a lot of BG2, I choose somewhere in Faerun...
Now it'd be a tough call between 'low level Water spirit who does nothing but float happily in water' or 'low level elvin fighter/thief'.
I'm thinking the fighter/thief, I can see it now. She stumbles into the city from her farmland home for the first time, her eyes widening at the wealth all around her. A desire for that wealth to be on her own person instead of on fat old merchants sweeps over her, and she begins to work on stealth and pickpocketing. She happily wanders around in and out of invisibility robbing everything in site.
It works well for several days until she realizes that she's getting a lot of gaudy jewelry and not so much of anything else. Following a mark home, she tries to enter his home to get even more loot, but alas, those darn locks! Time for more practice!
(I'll leave off before we get to her disasterous meeting with a cranky mage in a tower, though her singed ego and behind do lead her to invest in 'detect traps'.)
