Worst Hors-D'ouvre

Post by THE JAKER »

What is the appetizer that when you go to a party and you see it, you go "oh no!"?

I was thinking of this because I have a box of instant potatoes, and it has a recipe on the back for a burrito filled with: mashed potatoes, lunch meat (ham and turkey), and shredded lettuce :( Sounds vile!! If anyone has any nominees for the "worst recipe on the side of the package", submit that too!
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

I pretty much like all food, but there is a typical Swedish hors D'ouvre that is very common in summer and around christmas. It's called sill in Swedish, and it's raw herring put in vinager together with salt, sugar and some other spices. Many foreigners love it, though.

Because this dish is so common, people always comment and nag if you don't eat a lot of it. It's like just because it's common, everybody is supposed to like it. Must be an effect of democracy... :D

What about Ginger, that is horrible. THere is this thing you can do with it that makes it taste like anchovies. It is horrible.

So at Swedish parties, everyone's breath smells like RAW FISH in VINEGAR!?!?!?! UGH!!! It sound like kitty paradise, but it takes a little of the bloom off the Swedish rose for me! :)

A lot of people eat that in Denmark too - that and smoked "sild" (as it is called in Denmark) /herring.
But not as Hors D'ouvers.

Actually I don't think there is a general type of hors D'ouvers in Denmark, most people just severe what ever they like.
As for the worst - well I must say, since I am very ahmm... "selective" ( :D ) about my foods there is a lot I don't like - but raw fish, well, fish of all sorts - I don't like and very very seldom eat that :)

@Jaker: The sill is a traditional course, and traditionally it is also washed down with a snaps, ie a shot of some strong alcohol drink like Absolut Vodka. That kills off the smell of raw fish :D
If you ever come to Sweden let's say in business, and your invited out at dinner in summer time, you'll most surely encounter sill. My advice is: eat the potatoes.

@Xandax: I don't mind raw fish in general, I like pickled salmon and sushi. It's the sickly sweet taste of the sill I dislike.

The Danish smoked shrimps are delicious :) Perhaps the smoked herring is good, too?

Sill sounds delicious, but then I love vinegar. I've actually sat and drunk a bottle of vinegar before. :D I like almost all seafood from Cajun Grilled Catfish to Sushi to Crab and any other seafood. About the only seafood I don't like is oysters. I don't like the texture. *shudders*

Peanut butter, mayonaise, and lettuce sandwich snackin' squares. I have a friend who not only serves these at parties, but she eats them regularly. Not myself nor none of our friends have been brave enough to try this concoction. It just seems wrong although she swears it as a delicacy.

Hey, my old topic makes a reappearance!

Those sandwiches sound pretty weird, Ned, but you can never tell with peanut butter, it's pretty good stuff. My dad eats peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, I've been eating them since I was a kid. Everyone is grossed out by them, but if I ever get someone to try it they usually say "hey, that's actually pretty good." :)
