Thanks for the explanation. Getting into the mechanical details of a game's system is a big part of the enjoyment for me. Hence the frustration with Oblivion's system: it feels terribly unintuitive that the more you train your favourite skills (and thus level), the harder a time you'll have.

They sure did something right with Skyrim when they tossed that whole major/minor thing. People complain about the loss of skills and character diversity, but it was still probably the wisest thing they did.

You might also want to hold on to all your damaged armor for this reason.

If you choose to degrade your own armor via magic so you can repair it, be forewarned that the spell Disintegrate Armor is currently bugged! The spell effect only counts for the first second, so 50pts for 10 seconds only does 50pts of damage total. So keep the damage slider as high as you can cast it, and the time slider all the way down.

I tried the magic approach to armor skill training once, but I thought it just took too much time. It costs you a lot of time to wear down your armor magically, which is all too easily repaired with a few clicks of your hammer. So a lot of effort goes into not a lot of return. It's also always a random piece of armor that gets damaged (unless you wear only one piece of it). It might be better to just use trainers instead.
