What happened, GB?

this has been an interesting read for me.. as one who was an active member to one who is not so much anymore (but still do occasionally lurk )

i know for my own personal reasons for not being so active was.... well, life. I originally joined while in the midst of my divorce and it was a much needed outlet for me to be able to talk to normal (well, MY kind of normal anyways, lol) people and just be me. i met terrific people like dragon wench, bloodstalker, weasel, cm, scayde, and many many more who were VERY active back then. but at some point other things in life came in, like i had a baby, terrible break up, father died, major depression, and trying to maintain my new job i got while managing as a single mom to a child with behavioral problem that would get him sent home. Now 7yrs later ( holy crap! cant believe i have been a member here that long!

) life is coming to a normalcy to where i can try and enjoy internet fun and games again ( anoweenie romance anyone? lol)

ok.. need to get back to my point. when going with the times and peoples lives change..... so do their preferences in what they do change (usually, not always). we are an ever evolving race and cant help sometimes to go to the newest latest and greatest thing. think about it..... are you doing what you thought you would be doing or be the person you were dreaming about 10 yrs ago? i bet at least 75% or more of you will say no. would i expect everyone here to still be here or be the same as they were 7yrs ago when i first logged into this site.... absolutely not.... change is what make people and life interesting and i like it that way.

so where has all of GB gone? some are still here... some just lurk... and some moved on to go with something to accommodate and go with their life changes.

This is one of my regular daily news sights. I am not exactly sure how advertising works but my normal way of leaving the site is to hit whatever banner ad is at the top of the page for no reason since I never really buy anything.

Does Steam have a referral program? I mean, you started posting the daily price sheet and I've got a few things through those posts.

When I am playing a game, I normally do gamefaqs, gamebanshee and perhaps a youtube walkthrough, but normally only on my second playthrough.

I really value gamebanshee.

haven't been in here for awhile..

world of warcraft took quite a few regulars away when it came, happened to me aswell.

Then there were the problem of ppl who were smart enough to disguise their flame eventhough it was blatant it couldn't be intervened. And then the few who got banned due to flaming openly at "smarter" ones.

GB really helped me alot when i was playing BG2 and it was fun helping others with problems in BG1 / 2.

Am I the only one who sighs in desperation at video-walkthroughs? I prefer the excellent, detailed Gamebanshee written style, with all possible consequences spelled out of certain actions, combined with an easy way of referral, so you find things easily. I don't see video's offering that. Even just searching for the right part takes twice as long.
Then again, I'm probably "old" for the current internet generation.

Heh, I still check the walkthroughs here from time to time.

And this thread seems to attract old members that haven't posted in a good while.

I find "static" Gamebanshee to be a comfort these days. I can't stand watching youtube walkthroughs (my roommate watches them all the time). I find them shallow and annoying. I use Gamebanshee as an encyclopedia when it comes to pretty much all my favourite games, new and old. Although I don't really post anymore (WoW kinda halted my posting days) I still visit the site frequently, both the walkthroughs and the forums.

As Buck said, Gamebanshee is not the fastest or flashiest site on the web, but it has a strong degree of intelligent, in-depth quality information that is easily accessible and often very well written and that is why I return to GB time and time again.

And ofc I must admit that I like to loose myself in the archives and read old old old threads in the BG2 section just to pass the time

I actually don't mind watching video walkthroughs when I'm stuck in a certain level of a game. Only when I'm stuck, though, especially in Fable 3 where getting on top of a particular rock requires taking advantage of a glitch because the location did not update itself after completing its last main quest.

But I also do refer to the walkthroughs here from time to time, though not so much now as I haven't been playing RPGs after Dragon Age.

Despite my actual join date, I've been coming here for many years 5-6? What drew me in originally was the walkthrough's, although I have less time now then I did when I finally signed up, I find it interesting to come here read comments and skim forums, often the difference in opinion can be frustrating, but enlightening and helps brings perspective on gaming industry and new idea's to bring old games to life.

I haven't been around forums for long, but I can see maturity and respect for others all around, not too many communities have that these days.

Thumbs up to all of you who made the community what it is. =)

You and me both, sir; on all points. I only watch walkthroughs as entertainment, for those games I never intend to sit down and play. The same way I enjoy viewing the occasional speedrun. :mischief:

This seems an appropriate thread for me to post in after yet another significant absence. I won't bore anyone with the details.. but I've been pretty deluged by a lot of things for a long time.
But after just lurking and checking.. I miss the place and the community very much, so I'm wanting to actively return.

Really.... the community here is a gem compared to pretty much every other virtual space out there.. and if it is smaller and quieter... well you know what they say about small things and small packages..

It is still true, you cannot get the bandana from drow through slaughter - you need to purchase it. Alas, I now realise how I never really had a grasp of how to swing the verbal vorpal sword, all I had was a Blade of Woe found behind a closet of a bonemould guard. (TESIII, reference.) While, I may have not left much of an impression, I must admit that you did leave one on me. While that blade of mine might not carry the wrath it once did, I’ve found that the splintered pieces of eggshell still sting with pangs of annoyance caused by mild witticism and sardonic smile.

I thank you for that, though some others might not.

My life now - I'm actually in the game industry and have been for a couple years. I'm also in grad school and have a company I started on the side...so lack of time keeps me away from most social sites. I've forbidden myself from using FB more than once a week.

I came for a visit because I was writing a research paper on social media and had been thinking about my forum experiences. Most writers are criticizing the interwebz for its impact on RL communication. I've been looking at the effect on written communication. What is interesting about forums is that they are a midpoint or crossroads between letter writing and instant messaging. They are more like having a pen pal. The time-delay between posts tended to make the posts more well thought out or creative. I used to spend quite a bit of time thinking about what I was going to say on SYM.

There was definitely a special group of us here from around 2001 - 2004. I think it all fell apart right at the same time that newer social media appeared (the launch of myspace and FB) and there was also the advent of WOW in 2004. WoW definitely had its icy grip on my heart for a couple of years... I did have some good experiences doing some heavy RP in WoW, but nothing compares to the Dark Flames! It just seemed that people drifted away one by one. I'm sure that other groups came and went through SYM as well.

I pop in every once in a while to say hi. So, hi!
