I thought shooting at a target engaged in melee with a friendly character just results in a -4 penalty to attack?

(that is true, but you were grappled, and that is a so motion filled act that a ranged attacker without the Improved precise shot feat must roll randomly to see which grappler is hit)

Kuu'shar
You hit the halfling in the chest, she seems surprised as well as enraged, not taking much note of the arrow. "Finish her, I'll handle that!" she says

(gabriel, you are now on the vantage point, next to Kuu'shar. 24 hours)

With all my options out of range, I stand on the knoll and watch the battle unfold, ready to intercede when the time comes.

Sjerith
Gripped by indesicion you stand there, observing what is going on.

Bandits
The bandit lying next to Eimia coughs up some blood. The gnome and halfling look at the hobgoblin in shock and charge at the hilltop in unison.

(The bandits are now 60 feet away from the hilltop with the three remaining guards of the caravan)

(Kuu'shar is up next.)

The bandits look shocked by the statement of the bugbear, and especially when he hits the halfling in the stomach. This seems to enrage them even more.

(Gabriel is up next, 60 feet to nearest bandit, the snow is still deep and inhibiting movement, efficiently reducing everyones speed to half)

As Gabriel brings down the halfling bandit, and Sjerith starts charging at the gnome, manifesting a blade from his hand the gnome seems to lose his spirit. "No, I surrender" he squeals and throws his pick to the ground "don't hurt me, I've got kids" he cries out and looks at the kobold with cowardice, obviously not an experienced combatant.

(Eimia, you can take a roll on stabilizing)
(Sjerith is sending me his actions in advance via PM at the moment, due to internet issues)
(Kuu'Shar is up next)
