Fallout Tactics:Big guns and Energy Weapons

Post by Lopov »

I'm playing FoT for 2nd time now, but I haven't finished it for the 1st time because I moved from one town to another and when I was settled, there were more important things to do than playing games.

I'm now at Osceolla and I remember that after that mission there are two more and then last part begins - with robots being the enemies. In my 1st playthrough I never started "robot missions", so I have a question concercning weaponry.

I know that only energy weapons are really effective against robots, so can I sell ALL of my big guns ammunition and ALL big guns (Browning, M249,...) and replace them with energy weapons or are big guns effective as well? Thanks for your help, I don't want to increase big guns skills further if it's completely useless against robots, but I want to be sure if I can really get rid of heavy weaponry?

If I recall correctly, it has been quite long time since I played Fo:T last time, you are right that the robots are main concern in the last part of the game. big guns do damage robots, though not as well as energy guns.

As for whether you should dumb all big guns, I suggest that you keep one character with big gun, perhaps as secondary weapon and giving energy weapon as main weapon. This is because there are some occasions when having big gun is better than energy weapon, though those situations can be solved with grenades as well.

In the last section you don't need to raise Big Guns -skill anymore, just concentrate on other skills (energy weapons, sneaking and so on...).

So, to answer your question, either have one character with big gun or grenades, which ever you prefer more.

In FO:T - energy weapons trumps any big gun 99% of the time.
The only advantage of big guns are that you get them earlier - so the only reason to use them later is to use "veteran" characters you've leveled up. (IMO)

That's right, but as I recall the ammo for energy guns is a bit more rare than ammo for big guns, especially when compared to the fact that you have access to big guns ammo earlier. So, in that aspect, I would say it's better to use big gun when you need to use burst shot mode against a target that doesn't specifically require energy weapons (like muties). Six characters using energy weapons tend to go through the ammo pretty quickly, so at least having one big gun as backup is not bad idea (IMO).

Yeah, it has been long time since I touched Fo:T, so some of the things may be a bit inaccurate, I think I should play through it again to give better summary on this topic.

You also need much less ammo with energy weapons with aimed shots which will take down most.

The way I normally do it is having a couple of rifle persons I also level up in energy weapons and a few "big guns" people I use until I start getting enough energy weapons in which case I change those big guns people out with other (automatically levelled up) rifle people as well that then get levelled up in energy weapons.

Big Guns mostly seems useful when driving around the vehicles and having real time mode on with overwatch, and the mission where you defend the church.

I'm starting first robot mission today - Great Bend, I have four members in my squad team, but I think that's sufficient, because all four are experts in energy weapons, two of them are also very good with big guns, one of them is a medic, sneak skill is quite high, although power armor reduced sneak skill greatly for my squad leader.I'm planning to keep four members until the last two missions, when I'll probably pick two more energy weapons experts just to be on a safe side.

Last time I played this game my squad consisted of two snipers, two energy weapon dudes and two heavy weapon dudes and it was quite easy to go through the game like that.
