Weapons: Medieval vs. Modern

Post by Windwelder »

Hello,

I have installed the game and updated it to version 1.1.

The game is old but amazingly entertaining! However, once I reached the modern times, I got gravely disappointed. The modern weaponry in the game is lacking when compared to medieval weaponry. I have tried time and again to somehow adapt to the new weapons, but found myself walking around with a sword (for Christoff, at least) throughout the entire game right up to Vukodlak, whom I defeated using two swords, one in my hands, the other in Wilhem's. I wouldn't have it any other way, since modern weapons simply do not pack enough of a punch! I don't know whether this is a bug, but I learned that modern weapons just don't cut it when dealing even with the Setites, who are supposed to be the easiest enemies in the modern times.

On multiple occasions I've found myself having to discharge 5-7 rounds out of a modified shotgun (80 points of damage IIRC) to bring a Setite down, whereas I found that 2-3 swings of a sword are sufficient to kill same enemy. I have even undertaken a sort of test, using cheats to increase my Strength and Dexterity to their maximum, and it still is the same!

I thought perhaps it is because most modern weapons inflict Bashing damage, as opposed to Lethal damage inflicted by medieval weaponry. But this would make absolutely no sense, since the game's designers knew this would happen. There's absolutely no sense in increasing a weapon's damage to 80, if this is not the number of hitpoints deduced from the enemy simply due to the nature of said damage being Bashing. This is why I was lead to believe this to be some kind of a bug.

I mean, this is absurd. I simply can't use modern weapons, and I can't rely on any of my coterie memebers who use them, either (especially against Wraiths).

So, what do you think about this?

Vampire Damage

I know that it can be puzzling in the beginning.

But modern weapons only give vampires "bashing" damage because they have no vital organs. So to them, a pistol shot is like a little cut to us. They also heal faster and are more resilient. When you use a sword in the game, you combine the sword's damage with your strength and potence if you have that discipline. Also with Celerity you can hit an enemy several times with a sword while with a modern weapon, you can only fire a gun at a certain speed. The bullet will not travel faster because you're faster - but you can definitely swing your sword faster. That's the reason why when you have a stronger character, swords work better. For better shooting however, if you don't want to miss, you have to have high dexterity and perception. But the damage won't increase, you just won't miss. With swords or even better - protean claws (aggravated damage) you can combo with strenght, potence and celerity. Bashing damage is easily soaked by a vampire using stamina, lethal damage is tougher to soak, and aggravated damage is only soaked by fortitude and some armors.
But hey, if you really want to use modern weapons that can cause major damage, use the grenade launcher, rocket launcher, magnesium crossbow, even the chaingun (bashing) yields some damage because of it's fire rate, but it's better to stick with the fire weapons.
I have beaten Vukolak before using the grenade launcher and lots of grenades, but I rather buff Christoff up in Strength, Dexterity, Stamina, Potence, Fortitude and Celerity to beat him 1 on 1 (I've done it! Just steal his blood first with Traumaturgy). But it's possible to use guns. But bashing guns aren't as powerful to vampires.
I hope this helped!
