Without getting too spoilerish...

That combat is completely optional. If you let the "good" brother Genitivi (I think) go, he spreads the word about the Urn. Leaving the Dragon could prove a boon.

The Dragon is level 15 according to the Wiki, and if you are less than that, Alistair recommends that you not take it on. Greater than that, he keeps his mouth shut, or did for me.

Pros of killing the High Dragon: The Scales can be made into an Awesome set of armor. Fairly decent XP, and other items.

Cons of Killing the High Dragon: You miss out on the Dragonscale armor (Heavy or Massive), the XP and the other items.

Good reason to let it live (assuming the Ashes are not desecrated): WHen the Word spreads from the Chantry that the Urn has been found, people will likely destroy the last remains of Andraste, over things like missing toes (Alistair comments that he hopes the Urn is self-replenishing). You can't argue with the self-righteous, and their belief that they deserve healing over the most minor of things. IF the Dragon lives, after a few failed attempts by the Templars to remove her, she destroys the Temple and leaves. Some speculate that a Cult has removed the Urn, others that it never was there, and others that the Maker himself removed it to a new location.

I tend to let her live, and destroy the Horn (PC, it's a Gong for the Consoles) just to make it harder on them.
