I'm in awe of all your damage rates

Post by geriatric »

I only started gaming a few months ago, and recently bought TQ IT. I am amazed at damage rates dealt out by the characters of other members, and wonder if I'm playing the same game as you.
I have now retired so age has slowed my reactions and finger speed, my so-called "hero" stinks as he spends most of his time collecting 'tombstones'. He even died several times in Helos. This has not effected my enjoyment of the game as I kept on and currently am lost somewhere in the Parnassus caves and just had my head bitten off by a big red dog with two heads. I even suffered the embarassement of collecting another tombstone when a tiny spider bit me.
I think I need help badly from the experienced players. My "hero's" stats are: - Level 13 (Dream) str. 130, int. 160 and dex 78

Heals and buttons

Your skill point usage looks good.

Do you have enough heals? Pick up everything you find, upgrade your armor and weapons with it, then sell the rest in the towns, get lots of heals. You can redefine which keys are for health and energy so its quicker to cast when needed.

In the middle of the screen on the bottom you have the attack options. For Dream you should set the left one to the Psionic Touch and the right one to Distortion Wave.

Here's the link for Dream. Dream Mastery - Psionic Touch

Don't lose hope!

I'm just glad to see that you still enjoy the game; that's what counts and that's what gaming in the broadest sense is about.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I've seen some gaming hours. Started of with Runescape and evolved to World of Warcraft. In both games I was decently respected and have been member of top of the line guilds. At some rate, playing at such level just takes the enjoyment out of the game. Currently, playing Titan Quest, I'm happy at some point it's an offline game instead of a massive multiplayer one. A whole new level of enjoyment and a lot less walking on your toes cause others are watching you and scolding at you when you do something wrong.

When I do something wrong now, I just walk back to my tombstone and start up again.

You say that you are in awe of out damage stats. Well, that comes with the level. No matter how slowly you are progressing, as long as you progress, you're going forward and your damage will eventually increase.

I wonder, you said you are dream, what is your other mastery? If for some reason you haven't chosen it, you might want to consider defence. It helps greatly against dying. My main character is a Templar (DEF/DREAM) and, although I haven't tried many other combinations yet, I like Templar a lot.

Well, besides all this, I agree to CoreTwo's suggestions. Keep those potions handy. I always carry around 30 on me.

Some nice stats about the fact that everybody dies countless times in this game:

Kill to Death ratio: 145,50 (for every 145,5 mobs I killed, I died)
Kill to Health potion ratio: 6,63 (for every 6,63 mobs killed, I used a health potion)
Health potion to Death ration: 21,96 (for every 22 health potions I took, I died) (they really help!)
Death to level ratio: (133 / 38 = 3,5) (I died 3,5 times per level)

Keep enjoying this game!

There are ways to optimize a character. Gear is especially important and it takes time to find the right gear. It is also important to decide whether you are going to be a caster or melee. Hybrids are in between but they are more difficult! Casters take enough dex not to be critical hitted...they take no str and they take all intelligence (in general). Melee Should take enough dex to get some critical hits and not be criticalled, equip a good bow?, and the rest in str no int.

Then it really helps to know what skills work the best and to have a battle strategy. Sort of a fighting style.

str, dex, int all help equip items - int caster gear, str melee gear, dex bows/spears and some armor

str deals physical damage (this also boosts piercing damage because the %piercing means a % gets turned into piercing....so 2 for the price of one!)

dex deals piercing damage (also offensive ability but this only matters for melee not bows/staves, defensive ability which is very good but you can get more DA from gear than from dex by far, some people say it affects shield blocking missiles??)

int deals elemental damage (also helps some things with mana I don't play casters so I don't know much)

So in general you want mostly 1 of either int and str and then enough dex to equip items. Weigh the pros and cons of equipping less dex items vs. having a lot of str (or int).

Thanks for your kind response, and I'm pleased to say my "hero" has now improved - still pathetic but he doesn't die so often. I have discovered that I can assign the red healing potions to the right mouse, so preventing the previous mad panic to press the correct key before the dreaded tombstone appeared. As Psionic Touch is already on the left mouse button, I can't have Distortion Wave on the mouse too, as you suggest.
For some reason I don't have to use blue potions as the energy bar always remains full. Is this because my "hero" only uses a sword and shield ?
I collect everything that drops on the battlefield, so my "hero" has to keep nipping back to a merchant to sell all his loot, and also stocking up on potions at the same time.

Further to your response, I'm not going to lose hope as it's only a game after all, but it's nice to hear that you also often visit the graveyard too.
I've only got Dream as I had intended to maximise this before choosing a second mastery. Perhaps that is why my "hero" is so pathetically weak.
Your quoted stats confirm that everybody dies countless times in this game. But what about the many members on the forum who say they sail through the game withour dying once. How do they do this ?

Thanks for you kind suggestions about getting the right gear and the importance of Dexterity and critical hits. I didn't know this as although the game is in English, the manual enclosed is written in Thai, which I can't read. Despite this unfortunate problem with all the games sold here, there is an upside. All the latest on DVD only cost the equivalent of about $12. Not bad as they come in the proper box complete with key number. They are available at reputable stores, and are not illegal copies !
I'll take your advice which seem's to apply to my sword wielding "hero", but do casters also deliver crical hits from their wands ?
However, successfully upgrading and progreessing through the game really seems to be dictated by randomly generated weapons, gear and performance enhancing items.

Geriatric,

Don't go overboard on my advice on crits. It only applies to hand to hand combat (melee) not bows or staves (wands). Crits are not bad and warfare should be getting some since they have a high bonus to offensive ability from their skills. But good old fashioned HIGH strength can be just as good as crits. For a bow user I would take enough dex to use their bow. For a rogue I would take enough dex so I always hit and never miss with lethal strike. For a caster I want to equip armor. Casters get defensive ability from gear and they don't care about offensive ability. Of course this means that they need to find the best gear or they suffer. If you are melee and want to sometimes use a bow (I never do but I'm atypical) take enough dex to use a top bow. The best dex item in the game (bang for dex buck) is stone binder cuffs. The best version is legendary and I think you need 384 dex to equip it. Hunting can benefit from dex but they also benefit from str because physical damage is automatically converted to piercing depending on the weapon (click on the weapon and look for a % piercing).

PS the nice thing about TQ is that you can always learn something new! Just have fun. But of course part of the experience is trying to build up stronger.

Well, going Dream as a first class was probably your biggest mistake.

Most people start with a melee class if they plan on using sword and shield, this way they don't have to put as many points into dex and more points in str for a higher damage output.

I was a warrior all the way through normal and I only died a couple of times, 4 or 5, I think.
I had 2 green +20% str rings and a bit of +skill gear so it was like I was a few levels ahead of myself all the time.

I think you can multi-class by now, so you'd be better off going warrior now or starting a new character before it's too late.

There are a few handy sites you might want to visit too.

TitanCalc by stonedonkey - A Titan Quest Calculator
To plan out builds by level.

http://www.gamebanshee.com/titanquest/s ... ipment.php
This is so you can find a damage and stick with it, find out what increases your chosen type of damage (for example, piercing) to increase your damage output.

Titan Quest Forums
There are a ton of class guides, equip guides and farming guides there, so there's no shortage of help for your hero.

That's pretty much all you need to know.
