Disappearing Items

Post by segolily »

The way I play the game typically is to quest for a couple of days, dump the loot on the ground, at a mage's guild, or in one of my houses. Then I'll take everything to the shops and sell them. Lately, however, the new stuff is disappearing -- even after one day. I searched the threads and learned not to dump on the ground (although it worked well at the character's lower levels). But dropping the stuff in my house without storing it in chests isn't working either. And I think that the sigal (sp?) stones I stored in a chest in my Skingrad house are also disappearing.

What am I doing wrong? My character is Battlemage, closed about 15 Oblivion gates, am Fighter's Guildmaster and about to be Mage Guildmaster, level 35 and play on PC. Have installed and am playing the Knights of Nine Quests at the same time. I'm wondering if I have left too much old stuff unclaimed at various forts and caves I've conquered.

Any suggestions? Any help is really appreciated. Thanks.

I have known for stuff dumped on the floor of your house to go missing at times. Dunno what causes this bug, or if there is anyway to fix it though. The best way to circumvent losing important items is to just store them in chests/containers in your houses. In fully patched games, items stored in such containers do not go missing or disappear after awhile.

Forts and caves will respawn with bandits and other baddies after three days. So, any loot you have left on the ground will naturally disappear too.

In Morrowind, if you dumped stuff on any sort of bridge it would sink without trace, right away. In Oblivion, sometimes stuff that gets dropped (as from a dead enemy's hand) will disappear into the ground, which is highly annoying if it's a particularly good item. But I have never known stuff to vanish if left on the floor in my hovel (I always use the hovel on the Waterfront). I have left stuff in containers in the Market District and forgotten about it for quite a long time, and still found it there when I remembered to look. Happily, the containers in the Market District and the Waterfront take ages to respawn. I've left stuff on the ground all over the place, and sometimes stumbled over it much later...

And yeah, I have had characters at lvl40+ with no real problems of vanishing loot.
