Alternative Medicines (serious - if possible)

Post by Mr Sleep »

Has anyone ever used any alternative remeides, ie. Homeopathy, Acnipuncture (sp?) that sort of thing. Were they effective, did they help you in any way?

Serious, if possible Mr N. :D

Good cure for depression, LOL! Some would beg to differ.

Mr Sleep - I have tried accupuncture for headaches. It *really* works. At first, having a needle stuck in your foot or arm to alleviate a blinding headache seems strange. But it does work. I've only been able to get a friend to do it once or twice though - there's no point seeking/paying for it 'cos the headaches is usually gone by then.

Aromatherapy is neat too. Bet no-one thought I'd ever say that on GB. :p

Perhaps your headache is stress realted, and having the accupuncture helps relive that? :)

Having a friend do it is a bit risky isn't it?

I've used Chinese herbal medicine for the flu and other ailments. I'm not quite sure that it was effective as it may have been my body's own defenses that did the job. IMO, the prescription medicine works faster.
I know that there are some potent Chinese herbal stuff out there and its been around for ages so I wouldn't doubt that it works.

I use only alopatic medicine.

But I know a couple(a man and a woman, married) that only use acunpulture and homeopatic medicine, they also, don't eat cow.
For some reason the Man is 55 and appears 35; and the woman is 48 and appears 30.

It works.
Don't know how but it works.

NeKr0mAnCeR - just commenting that Mr Sleep is looking for serious advice and I'd hardly call Gamebanshee "alternative medicine". But it was a good laugh (and to an extent, true - GB gives me lots of laughs).

Mr S - my friend is a gay pain nurse and was around once or twice when I had headaches. Since he's not attracted to me and I don't bat for that team, its not a problem.

I thought about learning it myself, but its expensive and takes time.

My wife and I both use Therapeutic Touch, which is now considered a standard medical treatment in many US hospitals. We also use Aromatherapy, but again, that's pretty standard these days.

while fairly standard these days, I find that regular visits to the chiropractor virtually eliminate migraines.

So far, I've been lucky enough to be a very healthy person, so I haven't had the need for any alternative medicine methods except a brief try of acupuncture for my insomnia as a 15-year old. The only that happened then, was that I got aching feet from all the needles ;)

Acupuncture has been showed to have an analgethic (pain killing) effect in controlled studies. It's used as pain relief at several Swedish hospitals I know of. There is a hypothesis why acupunture works, but I don't believe you are interested in hearing details about the spinal cord ganglia. Let's just say that academic medicine and science show some support for the pain killing effect of acupuncture.

I am, as you all know, something of a sceptic. IMO alternative medicine should undergo the same controls as traditional medicine, to make sure there are no dangerous side effects.

Why would an healthy person want to rise their testosterone and dopamine levels? I would never dare to manipulate my neuroendocrinology as long as I don't have any disease that change the natural balance in the systems.

You may damage Craig, and you may damage the needle.
