Beginner Fighter Advice

Post by Celikoth »

Hey everyone!

So I'm still doing the first act, and I've reached Fihelis' Estate and I'm noticing that I take ALOT of damage (even with a sheild) and I also notice that I miss my attacks ALOT. Even when I was using Bone Phoenix sometimes it felt I missed alot, but I felt I shouldn't be because I got the focus for morningstars.

I'm very new to NWN2 so I may be doing something wrong. Here are my current feats. I am level 8.

Toughness
Knockdown
Improved Knockdown
Weapon Focus (MorningStar) (For Bone Phoneix)
Cleave
Great Cleave
Dodge
Power Attack
Luck of Heroes

Tower Sheild +1 and Blade of the Gladiator are my weapons

Perhaps the game is just getting harder? Or do I need to change my gear/feats?

Any advice welcome! ^_^

EDIT: Forgot to mention I am a fighter class (8) lol

A. The game is getting harder.

B. You have a -2 penalty for a Tower Shield vs. a Heavy Shield.

C. A "lot" of damage is usually the result of sneak attacks. A high Spot and/or Listen skill should alert you to Sneak Attackers (attacking a Sneak Attacker before he/she attacks you removes their Sneak Attack). Remember not to get "flanked" - i.e. put your back (literally) up against the wall when fighting them. Spot is preferable (over Listen) in that a few Sneak Attackers have feint ability which allows them to Sneak Attack without the "sneak" part, and a high Spot will cause the feint to fail.

D. You should have selected Blind Fight by now.

E. Don't use Power Attack (that's -3 penalty).

F. Dodge is nearly worthless.

G. You should have at least full plate armor on.

H. Toughness on it's own isn't worth a whole lot, but in conjunction with Steadfast Determination (if you have SOZ installed), can be exceedingly useful.

I. Strength should be your dominate attribute (both for attack bonuses and damage bonuses when in melee combat). This is the attribute that should be selected at each level-up.

J. Occasionally make use of your Knockdown ability (move it from your feat discription onto one of your "quickslots" and after doing so click on it and then on the opponent you want to use it on).

K. Pick-up Weapon Specialization (after getting Blind Fight), for your morning star and start using it.

L. Enjoy the game difficulty, but if it's to difficult then consider adjusting the difficulty in the game settings.

Try to raise AC. If you have Elanee with you cast barkskin on you. Enchant your tower shield and fullplate to +3 if you have the materials. Look for natural amulets and rings of deflection in stores. If you have no UMD you can't wear dodge boots but you can wear boots of hardiness or something for some dodge AC. Stoneskin is helpful too.

A tower shield has a bug. The character sheet says you have -2 to attack but the combat log says otherwise. So always use a tower shield over large if you can.

Another way to get AC is to take able learner and put 10 pts into tumble. Enough skill pts then 20. Thats 1 or 2 AC right there. Combat Expertise is also a possibility.

Another thing is to upgrade the enchantment on bone phoenix to +3 if you have the materials (or 4).
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.

To enchant a weapon you need:A magician's workbench(sunken flagen), the Craft Magicial Arms and Armor feat, and the recipe for the enchantment.
Recipes can be found at: Weapon recipes - NWN2Wiki, the Neverwinter Nights 2 wiki - Races, classes, skills, and more

*Tip:Multiple AC bonuses of the same type do not stack*
