Characte build

Post by Finex »

Ok im kind of new to the game, and want to ask for advice/tips on my thought up char build. Ok it looks like this:

Im trying to build an ultimate ranged class (ranged as in distance :) )

Class: Wood Elf | Male
Sign: The Thief
Specialty: Stealth (want to be a bit more in bow than magic)
Attributes: Willpower (or inteligence, dont know wich ir better) and Agility
Major skills: Destruction (think its understandable why :) ) Alteratio (or Conjuration, dont know are the shields or minions better :/ need tips on this), Restoration (well for healing and stuff), Illusion (think its quite good for this build), Marksman (well no coment here :D ), Light armor (or Mysticism for ench. need help herd too), and finaly Acrobatics (for some controlable leveling). I need any tips/advices/comments u can give about my build :)

Well i basicly thought that ill have atributes on lvl up:
Athletics - speed
Alchemy - easy inteligence
Conjuration (or Alteration) - intelligence (or willpower)
Mysticism (or Light Armor) - intelligence (or speed)
Security - agility
Sneak - agility
Armorer - endurance

So concidering that ill level a bit too fast, il be able to keep up my stats aswell (or atlest i think that their controlable easily).

So comment/give some advices, tips on this :)

Hello & Welcome, Finex! (SPOILERS?!)

Do you have Prima's Official Game Guide or not? If you do, that's good, consult it then for all I can do is refer to it for you as I have a copy. If not, let me know, and then I can look up what you need to know. But by then, maybe someone else may have beat me to it here.

But until then, here are some tips that you can use, hopefully!

#01: Don't kill your trainers! (The ones that you pay or quest for, before they will train you.)

#02: During some quests, you get esoteric training not availbale via any other method, as a reward for helping that person. Keep Baurus alive! (I could name more who will train you if you keep them alive long enough.)

#03: Do the Daedric Shrine Quests as soon as possible, for the very last one rewards you with a book that adjusts your stats as well, if you want. Otherwise, if you get your stats just so, and like then that way, well any of the above will change them. Meaning that sometimes, my stats got reset to minimums, because if you are peaked at the top, or near it, the progress bar has no choice but to start over. Sort of like the odometer on a car reaching the maxium, before becoming all zeros again! So doing such quests early enough, will prevent that from happening to your stats!

#04: Reading skill books will also adjust your stats, if you haven't peaked yet. Skill books are manuals and other books with a skill desciptor in the narrative. Be on the look out for them. Your journal will count how many of them you've read.

#05: Anyway, as for just starting out at the very beginning, your stats look good wnough to me. Oh, and while you're character is still monetarily poor, that's when Isleif the Open-Handed will help you out, not after! Otherwise he will tell you that you're to rich for him to donate money to. The "Abandoned Shack" is a good place to start sleeping or living until you can buy a place or rent one.

#06: Now, I hope that helps! Go out there and have fun! Show the people in Tamriel what've you've got and give them what for! *sniff* ;)
Shhh! Be very quiet! I may be sleep writing and sleep reading!

Sorry for the extra post, something glitched in the middle of writing.

I would put more emphasis on Willpower than Intelligence when considering Class, although to be frank I always have Endurance, and I also prefer Luck (it affects everything, and is hard to increase in game). Intelligence can be increased at will by using Alchemy, if it's a non major skill.

Comjunration over enchantment every time, not for the summoning, hardly ever use that, but for Turn Undead (e.g Turn & Burn, Turn up to 25th Level for 10 seconds, Fire Damage 3pts for 10 Seconds, wave that Zombie bye bye!). Alteration sucks, you can enchant fire/frost/shock shield on anything, nothing else is worth having IMHO.

Restoration is good for Absorb Health of course, but is very slow to increase, I usually have it as a misc skill, but it does work as a major (Turn and Absorb is a very nice alternative.) Make sure whatever you do that at least one Willpower skill is not a major!

Mysticism is OK, I'd have Block instead of Acrobatics as a controller personally, Illusion is an absolute must, but can be problematic. The problem with Illusion is it can be a game killer, and that's without even considering Chameleon! I won't go into details (unless you want me to) but you can create a spell using Illusion that makes every opponent a body bag!

My curent character is a Dark Elf, Majors (current level) = Blade (44), Conjuration (39), Detruction (51), Illusion (44), Acrobatics (45), Light Armour (76) and Sneak (61), notable Misc Alchemy (100), Marksman (47), Mysticism (55) [I've 'cheated' and made Absorb a Mysticism spell as per Morrowind by the way], Restoration (40). Obviously I don't care how fast I level up, and so far (16th Level) no problems. I've just completed the Knights of the Nine (a doddle), about a third of the way through Shivering Isles, only done Kvatch (haven't delivered the amulet), Mages guild as far as gaining my staff.

As long as you keep you destruction moving (using it a lot) you shouldn't have to fear levelling up too quickly. It's characters that are wholly hack and slash that need to worry about that in my experience.

As an experiment recently I started a pure mage, went throught the main quest and Mage Guild recommendations. Finished the MQ just after reaching level 4, doing every MQ quest, i.e. including Aid for Bruma.

Did the same with a straight fighter, not doing anything but MQ, he was level 9 when he finished. The mage took about 12 playing hours, the fighter about 36.

Apologies if I've wafffled too much.

All guilds throw you out if you get caught stealing from a member or kill a fellow member, not for action invoving non members. You can also get kicked out for stealing guild property,so when on guild turf beware the red hand!

There are complications though, a couple of the Thieves guild quest can cause problem with the Mages guild, one is obvious and shouldn't cause a problem if you don't get caught. The other is less obvious, and the person who gives you the 'Arrow of Extraction' quest gives you bad guidance, not surprising as he's obviously evil. Just remember that the person he tells you it's OK to kill is a member of the Mages Guild, you don't need to kill him, so don't!

This site is an invaluable source of information.

Galraen, makes some nice points, and in an entertaining and educational way too. I looked "doddle" up in my dictionary and couldn't find it! Oh, I see he's replied again! Let me see what he wrote.

Ah, okay. What he said! Except that I think of the Robin Hood-like G.F. as a desperate man, eager to get his life back, and some would say that the wizard is also a Necromancer anyway.

There's a big rumor going around, that says that if you do 100% of the quests, et cetera, that you unlock a bonus Elven city, to go explore. X-Box 360 players have been said to find it too, after doing the regular non-mod quests, prior to the official DLC ones. So there may be incentive to do everything there is to do, even if it defies RPG logic. I'm trying to experiment with that too to see if it is true, but I keep getting characters broken and have to start over.

But anyway, yes that link is what he said it is! There are a lot of non-mod factions that can be joined, and yes some conflict, logically. Ergo it makes sense to do the criminal ones first, then seek redemption ala Xena. Starting out imprisioned even helps in that regard. You can see it as just being whatever it was that got you arrested to beging with, before finally accepting the chance to redeem yourself as the Emperor intended.

I'm not tired, so I could list the factions, however if you follow Galraen's link, you'll see that list anyway.

Being able to talk talk to the Mage Scholars is a seperate faction though, kept hidden from the Player. ("Mage Conversation Guild".) If you want to talk to them, open your Console using the ~ key. Enter the Faction Form ID: 00069476 and then the rank code: 0. (Without the period!) I've tried it and it works! Also you can join, "Kordan gro-Dragol's Faction of EEEEvil" that is also hidden from the Player Character. I haven't tried it yet, as I usually target them for arrest/duel/execution anyway. But their code is: 000CD329 or 000cd329. But you can be only on rank though. Enter 0 to become a "Class-A Jerk". (An odd rank to have as "jerk" is derived from "jerkwater town" and refers to a dweller of such a place. Jerkwater towns were built for railroad purposes, so that steam locomotives could get water refills. As no railroads exist in the game, without a mod, and there is a subway/minecar mod, the term is out of place. But what can writers do? Well, I digress!)

There are two versions of the "Nine Divines" to join. One is the official in-game version thanks to the Shivering Isles expansion, but you only get to be a "Pilgrim". The other is available via Console cheat only. The code is: 000223bc or 00023BC. I haven't tried it yet though. There probably won't be an icon to go with it, if it shows up in your journal anyway. The ranks are: 0 - Layman, 1 - Novice, 2 - Initiate, 3 - Acolyte, 4 - Adept, 5 - Disciple, 6 - Oracle, 7 - Invoker, 8 - Theurgist, and 9 - Primate.

You can give your Blade a promotion too, but you'll loose the nice icon, and I know as I've tried it! The faction code is: 000274ab or 000274AB. The usual rank that you can only get is, 0 - Knight Brother or Knight Sister. 1 - Captain and 2 is Grandmaster!

If you want to get a job with the "Imperial Trading Company", their code is: 000534F1. I've tried it and it doesn't show up in your journal, but you do get to access their places without tresspassing! Their ranks are: 0 - Worker and 1- Boss.

If you want the "Imperial Legion", "Imperial Watch", "Imperial Legion Outside Faction", and "Imperial Legion Battlemage", just let me know!

Just for fun, there is an NPC named "Ris Fralmoton" that can't even be found hidden inside the "Testing Hall" or "Hawkhaven" or the other places. I wondered why that left him out! So I used the Console Command of "Player.PlaceAtMe" and entered his ID number of, 00015EA1, just to end that bit of discrimination! He may as well get to have some fun with his virtual life!
Shhh! Be very quiet! I may be sleep writing and sleep reading!
