Bugged into submission

Post by sonofjeffer »

It seems like I find a new problem each week.
Now I just can't interact with anything by left clicking.
Except moving; that, I can still do.
Can't talk, can't use doors.

Yes, I know that I can talk to people with the right-click menu.
Yes, I know I can walk through doors to open them (before, I had to it 3/4 of the times)

But now I can't use the door/stairs icons.

I've checked around a bit, and while I've discovered that I am but one of many, I didn't seem to stumble upon any answer as to how to better my situation.

This forum talks about two patches, I'm pretty sure I have a third one on, too. Too many patches? Not enough?

The worst thing is that it is such a good game, why is it that unstable?

This is actually a new problem to me. Not sure what the cause might be.
I do recommend avoiding patch 3 and using one of the fan patches instead, though. I seem to recall something tied to the temple.dll fix involving clickability of objects (in addition to the looting bug it was primarily designed to fix). See thisthread for info on how to patch things up.

What you should probably do is uninstall and reinstall, then apply these patches. Of course, make sure you copy your save data and put it back in the right spot upon reinstallation.

(Use the lastest 1.3 build - it's still beta, but stable and far better than 1.2)

I uninstalled, re-installed the game.
Patched it, all as directed.
I copied my savegame.
And I STILL have the same problem.

I've read here or there about corrupted savegames through frequent autosave/autoload manoeuvres (guilty, Your Honor), but was praying it wasn't my case. Well, it is.

I'm disgusted and going to play Icewind Dale 2 instead; I can't just a game over like that. In a couple of months, maybe.

Thank you for the answers and leads given, though.
The patching guide is clear and helpful.

Ah, yes indeed. Autosave MUST be turned off, or you're asking for trouble. It's unfortunate, but true.

Saving regularly isn't too much trouble, but you're right that it stinks to have to start all over. (Though you can use the console to level up real fast and breeze through the beginning stages, if you wish. It's kinda fun in its own way.) :D
