Finam The Lynguist won't speak to me? Please Help *spoilers*
Finam The Lynguist won't speak to me? Please Help *spoilers*
I think I have encountered a bug, I found Finam's book in the brothel but when I talk to him he just brushes me off, I can't even ask him some questions. What do I have to do to return the book to him? Is it a bug? And in that case...where can I download a fixpatch?
Okay, I've checked the walkthrough and it seems that it's the same bug as in Baldur's gate...you can't proceed anymore....
So I installed the patch but I don't know if I should install the fixpatch hat I found in the FAQ...because on the site it says that I should start a new game thereafter...does that mean that it really doesn't matter if I install the fixpatch or not...I'm still stuck?

I suspect the best way to find out would be to install the patch, exit his home, reenter, and try again. If it works, you'll know that the patch did the trick.

It' s my understanding the fix pack is only to be used with new games. So I wouldn't bother installing it, at this point. It's better not to take any chances with ensuing bugs being created in the present saved games. Though I think that's unlikely.
MINOR SPOILER
A couple things, make sure you'd have all appropriate triggers. As such, make sure you've visited your room in the Fest Hall and found the Dodecahedron. And, out of curiosity, are you attempting to talk to Finam or his father's ashes? You'll actually learn the language from the ashes, assuming you learned that Speak with Dead ability a bit earlier in the game.
Anyway, sounds like you've had some hard luck. Hopefully the patch will help solve things.

I have spoken to both of them, and the ashes only tell me that he was murdered, nothing more. I haven't found my Dodecahedron yet. And Fall-From-Grace won't join my party even though I've talked to all the prostitutes...it's like she's on a loop...

You're having some terrible problems. I'm sorry to hear that. Personally, I didn't experience anything like that in the times I've played the game. Still, you might try picking up the Dodecahedron and seeing if that helps with the linguist quest. The Fall-from-Grace thing is a bit on the bizarre side (if you've done all the proper dialogues). *shrug* You could always try preserving your saved game files, then doing a complete reinstall.
SPOILERS
If you've got a 16 charisma you can bluff Splinter into thinking you already are a sensate. Otherwise, you'll need to join up with the Sensates yourself. All you have to do is tell Splinter you want to become one, and you'll have access to the Private Sensoriums.Unfortunately, I am fairly certain Fall-from-Grace's membership doesn't allow you access. For some reason, only the main character is allowed guest passes.....
To pick up the Dodecahedron, however, you'll actually need to go to living area off the main level of the Festhall. Talk to the clerk, and you'll find out that you have a room from a previous incarnation. The Dodecahedron is in the room. Fiddle with it. It's riddled with some traps that you can avoid with high enough intelligence scores (13 for the first trap, 16 for the second).Otherwise, you'll take some damage. Regardless, you'll eventually find its in an unknown language. Hence, you'll have need of visiting the linguist.
The more I think about, the more I think that doing this might solve your problem with the linguist. Once you have need of finding a linguist, the proper dialogues will become open.
If you found Aelwyn for Nemelle, go back and speak to Aelwyn after you tell Nemelle where she is. Aelwyn will then give you some information which will give you access to the Sensoria, without joining the Sensates and without needing high CHA.
Really? I can't seem to get the information out of her, how did you get it?

The trigger for getting more information out of either one is to speak to the other first, and exhaust all dialog possibilities (without doing anything she says will annoy her).

Hmm, old thread though only one that came up when I googled for it
Have the same problem. Finam brushes me off though I have his book. I have already learned the language from the ashes and read the Dodecahedron.
Got the official patch and the fixpatch.
Only thing I think can be the problem, is that I only talked to Finam before getting the book and after getting the book but also after learning the language from the ashes. So I didn't have any reason to talk to Finam beside giving him the book which might have caused the bug.
It seems from reading some walkthroughs that you can trade the book for Finam's father's notes to learn the language. But since I already know the language now it might have bugged.
Well, nothing serious, but if anyone know how to fix it don't hold back

Yeah, that bit really bugs me... I think I even posted about it on my forums. I wanted to fix it at one point, but can't really do so without adding dialogue which I don't do in my Fixpack unless it's -clearly- a bug.
In this case, yeah, you can't return the book if you learned from the Ashes already. It seems designed that way. It rather sucks, as you pretty much need metagaming knowledge to get the maximum xp out of the episode, but there's no simple fix for the matter.
