Gaining a new home

I would really like to know if there is a way to make a house your own in Oblivion. What I mean is this:

If I kill someone and would like to use their home as my own, how do I go about that, because whenever I want to sleep in the bed, it says that I'm trespassing. Is there a way to overcome this without resorting to the CS (i.e. just with the console in-game)? The goes for chests etc. but the issue of the bed is more pertinent :o

Open the console, click on the bed and type in SetOwnership, you will now own the bed.

I tried that, but when I try to sleep a box pops up saying I can't sleep here because I'm trespassing.

That's because you don't own the Cell. I'm not to sure if you can use the console to select cell ownershipand if you could you'd need all the ids.

SetCellOwnership CellID does work in the console, however as MageLord points out you need to use the construction set to be sure of the cellID. Often though the cell ID is the same as the cell name, but without the spaces and usualy prefixed by the town name. For example the ID for Nerastarel's House, upstairs is SkingradNerastarelsHouseUpstairs, the groundfloor of the house has the ID SkingradNerastarelsHouse.

When taking possession of a house this way, then you probably have to setwonership of the doors and any contents as well. Be aware that this is effectively theft by cheating, even if the owner of the house is dead, although I do confess to taking over Glarthir's house when he pops his clogs, he doesn't have any heirs apparently, because they never remove his body! Also by taking possession of things this way you don't get to fence them, which may matter if you're progressing in the thieves guild.

Why go to all that bother when there is a house for sale in every city? And the one on the waterfront is dirt cheap anyway? And any Guild you have joined provides a free bed, too. Beside the free bed outside Dzonot Cave, near the Waterfront. As for storing items you don't want to sell: until you have a place of your own, just store 'em in a container in the Market District - or dump 'em on the ground somewhere they are unlikely to get kicked around. You may need to remove 'em sometimes, if you think you are about to hit a respawn time, but I've never had to yet. It doesn't take long to get enough cash to buy the Waterfront shack and a set of storage containers.

What bother? Far less bother to type a few words into the console than chasing that idiot Orc around Skingrad so you can pay him an extortionate amount of money for an empty house! Mind you, considering what you get for your money that house is better value for money than the waterfront shack or the tumbledown shack in Bravil.

It depends on the type of character I'm playing how I approach it in reality. An upright fighter type prefers the Priory of the Nine; a mage prefers the Arcane U or Frostcrag; a thief will however quite happily cast frenzy on Glarthir then move into his digs once the guards have killed him.

Hello! I know that bedroll. I always take the bottles and sell them. ;) (Odd how in the game, they are like new, where in real life, litter bottles are used! With few rare exceptions.) Anyway, warning! A few of my female characters have gone to sleep alone on that bedroll, only to wake up with a stranger sharing the bedroll with her! It was like, "What the....? Who are you? Get off me!" :eek: Unless it was another female, then they'd wake up first and wake my girl up with a surprise attack!:speech: Oh, sleeping on that Argonian's bedroll, his intitials spell T-I-T, can lead to a shared sleep period too! :p

There's also a spare bedroll near a wall outside of the Arena, near the two sparring partners. If you kill the Marie Elena's crew, you have a free pirate ship! Everything is already marked as yours. If you don't mind roomies, sleep in the Abandoned Shack in the Waterfront. That's why it is there.

But anyway, somebody did make a mod, that allows you to buy Agamir's home, after the quest, "Unfriendly Competition". Someone also made a mod that allows you to actually rent boarding house rooms as such, rather than as overnight stays only.

The quest related homes for the DB quests, if you aren't in that guild, and don't plan on joining it, the target's homes don't always spawn inhabitants that live there even if you aren't in the guild. Sometimes they only spawn just for the quest's sake. However Francesco will be home, waiting for the assassin. He tells you take take whatever you like, just don't hurt him! A copy of his poisoned body will already be in the chapel's undercroft waiting to be given the antidote. I detect a glitch!

Oh, and taking over via console! Sometime's my Bravil House will show that I am trespassing when I enter. I just use the Console command to set ownership on the door, and the problem glitch goes away. I hope this helps! :)

If you are on PC... just download one or several of the many fine house mods available. Here's a good site to get you started:
Oblivion's Real Estate

The best (and ultimately cheapest) in-game house is probably Benirus Manor in Anvil. It's 5000 gold, and once you do the quest, it comes fully furnished. It's also a lot more attractive (and sanitary) than the Imperial City Shack. Honestly... one look at the filthy bed linen in that shack and my character ran screaming... :D

One question, when you buy a house is it possible that one can store some of your belongings? such as weapons, clothing...

Yep. Besides roleplaying considerations, a major tactical reason to buy a house is to have a place you know is safe for long-term storage of loot you don't want to sell but you don't want to pack around with you all the time either.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?
