I tend to use a thief dualled to regular mage.

Trade flexibility for specialisation? Tough call. :)

I often find I cannot cast all of a regular mage's spells before resting. Though this changed with the new bard songs in HoW.

I also take a bard for additional spell support.

As I have HoW installed, I don't like to play any of the specialist mages, since they lose the ability to cast spells from two schools.

necromancer. but the wisdom requirement is a major pain.

the ability to use conj / summoning and invocation magics is a major plus.

and it sounds cool.

I'm partial to the Thief/Illisionist.

However, with HoW, conjurers lose spells from the Invocation school. :eek:

Yeah, losing spells from two different schools is tough. Losing invocation means losing a lot of useful spells. I didn't think the conjurer was worth it with HoW installed.

I might play Invoker next time, even though it means not being able to cast 9th level spells since they're both from the Conjuration school. By the time you get them, they're just not that great because of the type of baddies you're facing.

I didnt experiment much with specialists, but my advice is work out the most indespensible spells and make sure they are available to your choice, so;

My essentials;
-Identify
-Fireball :)
-Summon Elementals
-Ottiluks Sphere (the one where target is paralyzed but 100% protected in sphere, can be a life saver)

Also quite cool
-Fire Arrow
-Haste
-Invisibilty

Those are my favorites, yours may differ, as you will have to make some sacrifice its best to focus on the spells you really cant go without when making your choice,

In my current game I have two mages in my party, an Invoker and a Conjurer. The Invoker is very valuable to the party, while the Conjurer is the most useless char of the party.
