Yes, like the mad said, you must put some adv. points to shield (light, med., heavy). If you are strong enough to wield it, the only thing that causes penalty is low shield skill ratting.

You cannot climb the mountains, and i've never heard about way to vale of ruins via forbidden lands. The one and only way in/off vale of ruins is by moonbridge with using the right combination of runes that mad wizzard gave to you.
So, there isn't the way to help you. Sorry.

Demon is hidden in sarcophagus and after you open it, you release him and small treasure (sometimes worthless but sometimes very valuable).
So and there is an amount of exp. after u kill him, and i think it quite enough to gain around 1.800.000 exp ;)

I've placed only three artifact to Talendor (horn, robes, shield) and he was back in his fortress ( i think that passed through shadow ruins is the key to his return - cause it works with 3 not 4 relics placed, maybe you need posses four relics, cause i use rod as weapon sometimes).

So, don't focus on that little "problem" and be satisfied with "nobody cannot stop me now, cause my chracter is almost half-god".

I use fighter/adept/valkyrie/celestial/warwitch character and she is very funny. Nobody in game (mean monsters) cannot kill me.
For example Baloroth was hunted down by my girl with spellenchanted emerald greatsword and fireward (celestial spell) in 15 sec.
