I am currently in chapter 2. Is there different apparatus' for different spells and ingredients?

I have placed the proper items on the apparatus and cast the proper spell but it still does not work... I am casting it on the apparatus itself..Is this correct?
For example:
quartz crystal and skeleton knuckle and cast mage armor on the table? And it mentions something about an amulet? Do I need ...

how do you use these? I try to do as the tomes say but it doesn't work... Please help
