Big Download Loves the 90s, Concluded

Big Download concludes their "We Love the 90s" feature by spotlighting PC games released during 1998 and 1999, including Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2, and EverQuest.
In 1998, Canadian developer BioWare had already released a couple of action games for publisher Interplay, but it was the role-playing game Baldur's Gate that established its powerful reputation.

Using the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition rules as its basis, Baldur's Gate provided a massive single player game experience. Players went through a long storyline and became completely involved with the characters. It was the first example of BioWare's commitment to making a game with strong story.

BioWare developed an expansion pack and a sequel to Baldur's Gate, then went on to make RPG's like Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. While BioWare is working on a new fantasy RPG called Dragon Age: Origins, a new Baldur's Gate title is said to be under development at the game's current owners Atari.
