IGN AU and Hooked Gamers' Top Games of 2008

Both IGN AU and Hooked Gamers have cranked out lists of their favorite titles this year, with Fable II and Fallout 3 being the only non-handheld RPGs scoring any attention. On IGN AU, Fable II took the #6 spot and Fallout 3 took the #2 spot. On HG, Fallout 3 took the #1 overall spot and the #4 Xbox 360 spot. I have no idea how a #4 game can still beat out the others in the overall rankings, though. Anyway, here's what IGN had to say about Fallout 3:
Here we are position two, and just a hair shy of the big enchilada. Fallout 3 is utterly amazing in almost every category, and it very nearly was our pick for the year. In fact, Patch fought so viciously, so passionately for this game that several people were hauled out on stretchers by the end of his enormous tirade, missing limbs, eyes and genitals. Understand, Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3 takes the incredible scope and depth of the first two core games and crafts a setting that is incredibly engrossing, detailed and frightening.

Fallout 3 was hyped to an incredible level, with games critics flocking to get their mitts on any scrap of information from early on. By the time of the game's release, few imagined it would deliver on such lofty expectations but amazingly, it did. Post-nuclear Washington, D.C. was perfectly realized, offering incredible and varied locations filled with creepy and entertaining enemies, a great cast of sub-characters and some of the most interesting and morally bankrupt quests and missions in gaming history. The production values were stellar, the pacing of the main quest was fantastic and, barring a few technical hiccups and some slightly roughshod animations, Fallout 3 remains one of the defining moments of this gaming generation. Eat it up, or Patch will hunt you down.
