King's Bounty: The Legend Peek #1

Katauri Interactive has penned their first "peek" article for RPG Vault that discusses the history, game mechanics, and team behind King's Bounty: The Legend.
It has been 18 years since the publication of King's Bounty, which was a straightforward game about a knight who, by the will of his sovereign, travels with an army across a fantastic kingdom. He collects treasures, employs troops, and battles with enemy forces during various quests. It was a concentrated RPG with no superfluous elements, a huge variety of game situations and a randomly created gameworld; those elements made the game a hit and caused us to remember it ever since.

Alas, there never was a sequel. Its developer, Jon Van Caneghem, decided to develop games in a different direction, with less of an RPG focus, and more on strategic battles. This why we now have a whole new series - Heroes of Might and Magic. The lonely, landless knight was turned to a governor who builds castles and develops the kingdom, and who investigates and conquer new grounds with the help of numerous heroes, mercenaries and their armies. The romanticism and freedom related to him was replaced by cares about owning a kingdom.

Almost 20 years later, the property is coming back to its roots; once again, it will provide a true knight's (or paladin's or mage's) adventure. Instead of daily warring for resources and the routine of constructing strategic objects, unexplored vast expanses and ancient secrets await the player. King's Bounty comes back sparkling with modern technologies, and offering anew the chance to plunge into an intriguing fantasy world and to undertake grand quests. Our game is a true sequel to King's Bounty, returning to the original direction of a role-playing adventure emphasis instead of a strategy title focused on building armies.
