Oblivion Takes GameSpot's Best RPG of 2006 Award

GameSpot has announced most of the winners in their "Best & Worst of 2006" awards, with Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV being being recognized as the Best RPG on any platform. It's still possible it could take the Game of the Year award, but since it lost out for PC Game of the Year and Xbox 360 Game of the Year, I highly doubt it.
It took a long time for developer Bethesda Softworks to make The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and it shows. While the premise of the game is that you play as a prophesied savior of a huge and beautifully rendered world, you're not required to follow the main quest at all. And as soon as you leave the beaten path, Oblivion shows its greatest strengths, offering highly in-depth quests that let you customize your character however you like--but it's always presented in an accessible way that makes it just as attractive to newcomers as it is to role-playing veterans. This is clearly the year's best role-playing game, and a remarkable achievement in its own right.
