World of Warcraft is quite possibly about as unoriginal as a game can get, yet the way in which a hundred MMORPG elements have been taken and so sublimely implemented ensures its positioning as a strong contender for game of the year (even if it is only March). The huge amount of content ensures you'll never have an excuse not to have a quest on the go, while the steady progress and genuine differences when starting new characters fuels its addictiveness. Whether you'll still be paying for the game in several months time is harder to predict, but we wouldn't be surprised if WoW actually improves over time, not least as the flood of casual gamers (or scum, as we like to refer to them as) moves on to the next Sims expansion pack, leaving the friendlier hardcore inhabitants to rule the world. If you're itching to try out an MMORPG, do yourself a favour and make it this one.

With the dust settling now on World of Warcraft, it is becoming more and more obvious that this is by far the best MMORPG currently on the market. It manages to walk a line that makes the game appealing both to the hardened power gamer, and casual weekend warrior, where both can enjoy the game in their own special way, without stepping on each other's toes. If you are looking for a new game in the genre, you would be doing yourself a terrible disservice by overlooking World of Warcraft.
