Three Days of The Matrix Online, Part Three

IGN PC's "Three Days of The Matrix Online" feature concludes, with the third installment offering a Q&A about the game's events and adventures with lead designer Toby Ragaini. An excerpt:
Q: Give us just a snapshot view of the state of the Matrix at the start of the game. What's the state of the world?

A: The Matrix Online takes place immediately following the events in Matrix Revolutions. The siege of Zion is over and Neo has been lost. The peace secured by Neo's apparent sacrifice has held, but no one is sure for how long. In the Matrix itself, three powerful organizations vie for control.

Under the terms of the truce, Zion has been granted the freedom to "wake up" as many people from the pods as are willing. But few among the Zion military trust the peace, and covert operations within the Matrix continue non-stop while "Redpill" recruitment continues.

The Machines are still reeling from recent events with Agent Smith, but they have moved to quickly re-establish control in the Matrix. While they tolerate the presence of Zion operatives, they are concerned that if too many "Bluepills" are removed from their pods, an energy crisis will cripple their civilization.

Perhaps based on Neo's unprecedented performance, the manner in which the Machines' deal with humans has also changed. There are reports of agents approaching human operatives in order to persuade them to assist their cause. Whether or not individuals will respond to these offers remains unclear.

Finally, the Merovingian has benefited from the confusion surrounding recent events. He continues to expand his powerbase, swelling his ranks with exiled programs that have fled the Machine city in order to avoid deletion. The Merovingian has also developed a newfound sense of respect for humans - or, perhaps he wants to be able to harness that power, for his people have also begun recruiting humans into the Merovingian's ranks.

So Zion, the Machines, and the Merovingian are in a tense cold war scenario and at stake are the destinies of human and machine alike.
