There are a few small glitches in the game, like your summoned creatures freezing up after a cut scene (only happened once), or the weird white blotch that temporarily appears in the middle of the menu screen. These errors are few and far between though, and, for the most part, the game runs smoothly and without incident. The small issues with hand-to-hand combat sort themselves out if you make sure to learn some special attacks when you level up. These small negatives are vastly overwhelmed and washed away by the game's genius sense of humor and skilled storytelling. This is one of the funniest and most entertaining games to have hit the market in quite a while. If you like Monty Python, if you just love to laugh, or if you follow role-playing games in general, then you should definitely take a look at The Bard's Tale.

I can't praise its groundbreaking gameplay mechanics, I can't gush over its unreal sense of reality, I can't be breath taken with mind-blowing lighting effects, but I can tell you this: This is the most fun I have had with a Role-Playing game in a very long time. It drips with an attitude that is wonderfully anarchic and cynical. It eschews the heroic knight in shining armor in favor a more (normal) hero. One that cares mostly for two things: Coin and Cleavage. And that can't be a bad thing in my quest book.

The Bard's Tale is an enjoyable game, but I don't know if it's worth the full purchase price. It reminds me of that old report card comment- the game has a lot going for it, but it isn't working to its full potential. Nevertheless, it is still worth checking out, but it is probably best for players to rent this before committing to a purchase.

The most solid aspect of this game is the dead on voice acting of Cary Elwes as Bard. You may remember him from such films as Princess Bride and Robin Hood Men In Tights. Elwes brings the character to fruition with his dashing vocal chords (I'll stop). The score however remains just another average entry aside from several little musical numbers reminiscent of Monty Python. The bottom line is that the game is darn right funny and at least worth a gander. The only things keeping it from hit status is the repetitive nature of combat and the sub-par music and sound effects. It's been said before, but I'll say it again, this is probably the funniest game I've played in a long time!
