L2 starts with a 2 Gigabyte 2 disc game, that you load an then update from the server. When you buy the original game, you get 60 days of free play. then you have to buy additional time to continue. One should note that you have unlimited play during this period, and the servers are quite reliable.
You have the obligatory selection of your character (you can have 3 on a particular server) and there are several servers to log into (so you can have different ones on different servers). The server choice is easy and you can see listed the selection, server congestion, and ping rate (low is good).
