In the quest for further genre subversion, The Bard's Tale aims to inject personality into the mundane. Shopkeepers barter with you for items. The game's narrator, trying his best to create a grandiose story, bickers with the protagonist. And rather than use spells, the Bard can summon (via his trusty instrument) up to six creatures to help perform tasks.
Amusingly, some aid him with little enthusiasm, unlike the over-the-top summons of, say, Final Fantasy. "The trap-detect spell used by the Bard summons this old guy with a cane," explained Fargo. "As soon as he sets a trap off, it comically kills him. So as soon as you summon him again, his reaction is, 'What are you, some sort of sicko? Something must be wrong with you!'"
