Robin Dews & Matt Sansam Interview

Robin Dews and Matt Sansam of Games Workshop are the subjects of a new interview over at ComputerAndVideoGames.com, in which they talk about their plans for Warhammer Online. An excerpt:

Q: Could you tell us about the character creation stage? Will we be assigning points to stats or "rolling" dice? How will that work in your game?

A: OK. Let me try and explain how this works without the aid of diagrams.

First of all you choose your race. This gives you a set of statistics that cover things like strength, willpower and other primary character traits. The starting values for those statistics will be based on the race you choose and each race has a different set, reflecting their racial strengths and weaknesses. Basically this means that Ogres are inherently stronger than Humans, Elves are more nimble and so on.

Once you've done that you then get some extra points to allocate as you see fit. So, for example, if you want to make your Elf stronger then you would put some of your bonus points into strength. However, the more points you put into any particular ability, the more it costs you to improve that ability. This means that while it's nice and cheap to improve at lower values, if you decide to put all your spare points into the same thing it becomes more and more expensive to get an increase. Simple really.
