It doesn't take very long to realise that Morrowind is a huge game. Though you have a clear objective early on in the game, you soon realise that there's no particular reason why you need to get to it right away. You could opt instead to explore the town or head north, south, east, or west and see where the roads take you.
You can even go northeast, southeast, northwest and southwest.
