You can have up to eight characters in your party, each of which you hire along the way. They started out with a maximum party of ten, but after some focus research, better known as "asking around," they found that most people feel that eight will be more than enough. You will probably be able to develop enough efficiency with only four or six, but the whole "siege mentality" is probably triggered better the more characters you control. The goal is to be able to get through the game with just one or all eight characters. Now there's just that pesky balancing issue.
