MythForce Development Update

Luke Rideout, the project director on Beamdog's roguelite adventure MythForce, brings us this year's first development update for the game. There, we can learn that the team is currently working on upgrading the game to Unreal Engine 5, as well as a major overhaul of the character progression system. The former should improve the game's performance, while the latter should make it more fun in the long run.

We're also told that these lofty goals are the reason for the recent lack of incremental early access updates and the delay of the game's second "Crypt of the Necromancer" episode. At the same time, we're assured that everything is progressing smoothly and we should be getting a new retail build "in the coming months."

Check it out:

Greetings, friends. Project Director Luke here with an update on the progress of MythForce. It’s been a while! We’re well into 2023, and thought it was about time that we let you know what’s been cooking.

Under the hood, we’re making some major architectural-level changes to the game, including an upgrade from Unreal Engine 4.26 to Unreal Engine 5. This isn’t a fast process but will get us some big performance improvements, help us with game stability, and also allow us to access some other important features that were introduced with UE5. This should also help us to prevent another outage like we had in the early part of February.

We’ve also gone over all of the feedback we received around the PTR and are in the process of making some sweeping improvements to the metagame, which we felt just wasn’t quite fun enough for long-lasting play in its current state. This “Metagame v2” includes a major overhaul of our character progression system with far more build customizability, a greatly improved weapon loadout and in-dungeon loot system, and more ways to improve and customize your play experience.

As a result, we’ve pushed back the release of the 2nd episode of MythForce, Crypt of the Necromancer, in order to complete our rework and ensure it meets our quality level targets. The good news is that we’re making significant strides, but it’s still a work in progress. In the meantime, we’ve temporarily paused smaller content updates to concentrate on finishing Episode 2 and a few other important things.

We think you’ll enjoy the changes and we’re excited to deliver them to you via the retail build in the coming months. In the meantime, players can look forward to a first look at upcoming features, new enemies, and a glimpse of Episode 2 on our socials.

Here at Beamdog we put a huge emphasis on crafting quality, and want to make sure that MythForce is the best game that we can make.

Thanks for your patience. We’re excited to get the next version of the game into your hands as soon as it’s ready!
