A successful and critically acclaimed video game movie remains the gaming industry's white whale. After Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft is trying to attain this coveted goal again. Following up on their earlier announcement of The Division live-action movie, the writer-director for this new project has now been revealed to be an Academy Award winner, Stephen Gaghan. His previous work includes Traffic and Syriana. Here are a couple of quotes from the people involved:
Sharing his enthusiasm for the source material, Gaghan said, “The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape [Massive Entertainment] created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities.”And to make this announcement more appealing to their less cinema-minded audience, or perhaps to showcase the game's atmosphere, Ubisoft also included the teaser for The Division's upcoming Last Stand DLC:
“We are really excited to bring Stephen’s unique vision of the game to film audiences around the globe,” said Gerard Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
