Dead Island Riptide Previews

We have a few more previews for the recently officially announced Dead Island Riptide, the not-quite-a-full-fledged-sequel for the original Dead Island.

Prima Games:
For Riptide, Deep Silver and the developers at Techland (who worked on the original) are adding some new décor. It's still quite tropical with trees and other foliage that make you feel like you're in the middle of an island, but it's a slight bit grittier this time around, as you aren't exactly working your way across the beach. It kind of resembles New Orleans backwaters, more like. Oh, and the blood effects? Fantastic. When we chopped someone's head completely off, the carnage certainly didn't come up short.

Game Fanatics:
We don't know much about Dead Island Riptide but are excited for a couple of new features. First, Deep Silver has added a fifth character character to your party who will have a unique set of abilities. That will vary your party's strategies and suggests that the waves of zombies or difficulty might go beyond what we've experienced from this franchise.

Second, a set of (hub defense missions) will emphasize a rich tower defense gameplay laying traps, putting up fences, and utilizing turrets to protect sheltered survivors. Deep Silver has also mentioned a new set of communication features integrated into cooperative play.

Destructoid:
One new character with a unique skill set will also be introduced. There's going to be interesting new vehicle-based combat, adding the ability to shoot backwards from boats and jeeps while another survivor mans the wheel. Deep Silver says there are also some new chat features that should improve the experience; I'm guessing voice and text chat, which were previously unsupported.

The menu doesn't appear to have changed, which is disappointing. I didn't get to see the weapon selection process or how the map is used but I can only hope they're speedier and more functional. There is the promise of an expanded selection of zombie mutations, weapons and mods, as well as environment-based defenses for use in wave attacks.
