Machinima has put together a four-part video series on the history of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, and while some of their facts are a bit suspect, it's a pretty good history lesson for those of you who weren't around to see it all happen firsthand. Part one treads into early MUDs and Neverwinter Nights territory, part two focuses primarily on Ultima Online and EverQuest, part three tackles a whole slew of modern games, and part four focuses on the newfound popularity of the free-to-play business model and upcoming titles like Star Wars: The Old Republic:
