The way you use lockpicks? (possible spoiler)

Post by WARLORD HECTOR »

In the first time, mostly I used the automatic lockpick option, because it was to hard to do it by myself. Mostly I had break to much of them by the manual way.

I'm not very sure but with the time (after lvling up) it seems that picking locks manually is more usefull. I'm nor breaking that much the pics and mostly 4-5 picks are enough for a hard lock.

So; by picking locks manually has the securety skill lvl any importance?

Also; what do you think about automatic lockpicking? Wich way do you choose?

Another term, what do you think about from "breaking picks also increases the securety skill". Is this right as a game rule or false?

I simply mash my little fists on the auto-try button like it's going out of style.

Well I do it manually, once I figured it out, I never touched the auto option. Actually to me the whole security skill has no purpose now - let us not even mention the whole Nocturnal thing ah - I could have opened any lock at level 15 once I had the nack of it.

And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

Locking picking in oblivion is nowhere near as fun as in say Splinter Cell. As such once I did the nocturnal quest I hit the auto button till it worked
hey maybe it's just me

Actualy picking locks with a minimal lock pick skill can be quite intence.I prefer the manual way aswell.

As Niteowl3915 said,do the quest and you never have to worry about what exactly you hit,the auto-button or some tumbles..

I use spells on <=Hard locks, and auto Very Hard locks.

Used to do it manually, but as you get more powerful you also get more lazy.

I pick them all manually. Security really is the most useless skill in the whole game, picking very hard locks with 5 skillpoints or 100 skillpoints is equally easy once you get the hang of the system. Sure, less tumblers will fall if you fail with a higher security level, but the system is so easy that it's almost impossible to fail if you pay a little attention.

I struggled ALOT with lockpicking when I first started playing. It got to the point that I would Save the game prior to picking just about every lock I came across. (Reloading if I broke more than 2 picks)

Once I got the "feel" for it however, lockpicking became alot easier. I would basically toss the pin until it would rise and fall really fast. Once the pin rose and fell really fast, the very next toss would sit in the chamber for a considerably longer time. Once I saw the pin rise and fall really fast, I would get ready to set the pin the following toss.

To follow up on LonelyPilgrims statement, I could be wrong but it seemed to me as well, that the pins actually would rise and fall ALOT slower as my security skill increased. The big determining factor for me was when I finally did acquire the Skeleton Key. Not only does it not break if you fail to set a pin, but it gives you a +40 to your Security Skill.
Once I got the Skeleton Key my Security Skill doubled. And once it doubled it seemed like those pins would remain up above the shear line for a considerably longer time.

If you are level 10 or higher, do yourself a favor, drop what you are doing, and go and complete the Nocturnal Daedric Shrine Quest. Once you do, alot of your lock picking problems will be solved.

I have found that the sound of picking locks throw me off, once you take the sound out of the equation, and just watch the tumbler, it becomes ridiculously easy.

I have to disagree with you, Phreddie. I find picking locks with my eyes closed a heck of a lot easier: the sound of the tumbler clicking into place is noticably different when it's time to lock it into place. Once I noticed the sound difference, I could pick a very hard lock at a very low skill level without breaking any picks.

Just because it's easier for you doesn't mean it's easier for everyone no? :) We are all different people so to each his/her own. I also disregard the sound completely and go for visual only. I can pick any lock with one lockpick.

Hey, I'm not saying you guys are wrong, I'm just saying I'm right. ;)

But seriously, for sure whatever works for each person is good.
I just wanted to point out to anyone who might not have noticed the barely-audible difference that listening to the sound of the tumblers is also a reliable method for manually picking locks.

On a related, lock-picking note: Anyone else think it's annoying that using the auto-pick option will raise your skill much faster than taking the time to pick locks manually?

And to answer your question, yes I agree but on the other hand, I find the whole skill is pretty much useless and totally wrongly done so...
