An disappointed IWD-Fan

Post by Nik2063 »

Hi there i am big fan of BG and IWD games and was looking foward greatly to ToEE.
But now i am back playin iwd2...
What i really like in toee is the engine: nice graphics and animations and the roll system behind, that u can click on every action and see exactly, what happened.

But a good engine dont make a good game, Toee is the best prove. so many little annoying things:
- 70% dumb quests (especially town)
- u dont find good magical items, not in hidden rooms, nor drop strong enemies some stuff
- knowledge arcana dont work anymore-identify every lvl1-crap (okay 3.5 i know, but when game-fun and rules collide, the fun-factor should win)
- why isnt there a MaxHp/levelUp option ? i know there are d&d freaks out there who like to get 1 hp when levelling up, but for a gamer like me, its annoying too quickload so many times (btw if u arent lucky, how should your Hp be enough in heavy fights?)
- the town is too big... too many unimportant persons - okay it looks really good and is more realistic than the classic 1 healer 1 smith 1 sorceror and a inn, but its boring and without the map from gamebanshee i had never found, the persons i searched for
- sometimes i believe in unfair rolls, and thats frustrating, i never had that in iwd2 and so on, but on toee i sometimes think, i gettin cheated by the cpu. my fighter has +8 and only needs 16 to hit but rolls 5-4-1 and the damn enemy rolls 17-18 ...
and if my fighter has a good roll, then he get a critical miss ...
- in some situations the game begins to freeze a lot, this happens most time when there are a lot of enemies nearby but even if i decrease all details to minimum that doesnt stop and its hard to center the screen to command your people around (system 1800+gf4200)
- story isnt very interesting (story in iwd2 isnt great, but u are involved in it the hole game and u know for what u are fighting)
- corrupted savegames ( yeah this happens to me too, and this really makes me throw the ****** game out of the window and install the old games again)
- bugs

hm i guess i would love the bg2/iwd2 with that new engine...
maybe some talented programmers get the engine and develop a good game with it

What's playing now

Although there isn't much out there any more for fans of the type game ToEE might have been (turn-based, especially), there is a real winner for D&D style Fantasy, still playable, and that is the Hordes of the Underdark expansion for NWN.

For fans of outer space fantasy, try KOTOR.

I agree with the first poster ToEE ended up being a great game engine with a crappy storyline, actually I'm not even sure you can call what ToEE has a storyline, but that's just me (or maybe not?).

Well if you play the actual PnP-version, it DOES have a storyline. But it seems that the developers have paid little attention to that

i liked the baldur's gates b/c the story was like so engaging you'd do thing and be like yea that was good, i am helping my cause! but in ToEE i just kill everything b/c nobody really matters. plus the entire story of the game is told in the 1 minutes beginning movie, which is just stupid. if you can tell a story in one minutes, it's a crappy story.
