Driving to Work in the Rain

Yes, it's raining.

And it’s not that cleansing, fresh spring-like rain that one greets with happiness, but instead the type of rain that hangs there, dripping every so often so that nothing dries off and the air is perfumed with the smell of earthworms…the squished kind.

And, yes I still am parking on the street, blocks away from my front door. Because my SO (‘I’ve go the most expensive car, and I’m a man, therefore I get the garage stall’) and my sister (‘I feel kind of bad that I’ve had the spot right in front of the townhouse for a year and your car just got broken into. We can ‘switch months’). Unfortunately my month isn’t until next month, and I think my yellow rain slicker has a leak.

Have I mentioned that we still haven’t replaced the car stereo since it’s been stolen? There is a stereo for it in the house, but asking me to do it is asking a fisherman how to milk a cow, just isn’t going to happen the right way. Sure, I may hook up the right wire thingiestm, but it’ll probably hang there suspended only by said wires flapping about in tune to the road bumps. My SO could replace it, but he’s not here (this is not in my list of complaints). :D

Now, the problem with not having a radio is that one can then actually HEAR ones car engine. This may be a good thing if your car does not belong to Viv, but for me, it’s pretty bad. It’s making a high pitched thrumming sound, and I’m hoping not to find a small furry animal that may have crawled in one night to die. Also, the back left tire is beginning to make this ‘thump’ sound on the pavement, with is a bit scary. I was going to check when I got to work if it was flat, but I forgot and went on my ‘must run getting rained on again’ way.

Have we discussed safety? It’s raining, sticky and cold outside. In my car, it’s warm and cozy. Apparently the windows, specifically the one I see through, don’t like this. I know this because it starts fogging up in little ‘window wiper patterns’. Why not turn on the blowing air on the window thing? Good question! Unfortunately that involves finding the faceplate that once held in my stereo that tells me what the dials mean. (I’ve tried randomly twisting the dials, but usually I get random results) :D so, there I am waiting for a stoplight so I can root around in the back seat for the faceplate. Usually I use stoplights to put on lipstick and check to make sure I’ve actually brushed my hair that day, so as you can imagine it’s a bit disconcerting. Plus, once you find the face plate, hold it up, and turn up the heat to stop that darn window fogging, you have no way of knowing if you’ll be able to find the face plate LATER to turn the darn heat off. I drove around for two days with the heat full blast at my feet in 80-degree weather because of this.

With all of these car problems, I’m sure you can imagine driving to work was very stressful three minutes. I’m hoping the drive home will be better.

Has this cheered anyone up? Anyone who has a radio and a car that’s not scary sounding? :D *hug* If not, I can share how bad work has been so far, and I’ve only been here thirty minutes. ;)

First of all, what kind of guy makes his girlfriend park blocks away from the house? Beat him down, Vivien, it's your job.

Second, does the "thump" coming from the rear wheel increase as your speed does? If so, it sounds like a belt in your tire may have come lose, in which case your tire needs to be replaced. If you jack your car up and take the tire off, it will bulge in one spot. Get this fixed immediately or your tire could blow out. If it's not the tire, it may be the wheel bearings, which you should also replace immediately.

If your car has a lot of problems (and it sounds like it does), you should probably get a new one, or at least a new-for-you car. By the way, have I mentioned that I have a 1994 Toyota Corolla that's in great shape for sale? (AC, AM/FM/CD, 4 door, 5 speed)

I hope your day improves; at least you have a job. I turned my notice in on Monday and next Friday is my last day here. Heh, heh, heh . . . The phrase, "That's not my problem" has been heard coming from my cubicle a lot in the last four days . . .

Well I have been known to play some pretty scary stuff on my radio ;) My car however still sounds scary, especially when the servo pipe decides to eject itself every other morning causing much cursing from me, that is pretty scary sounding too. Well I have witnessed the liquidation of a hard working good company this week, not fun at all, sot that qas pretty bad...erm other than that and other related problem all is well :D

-Life sucks and then you take a great deal of stimulants and poof it's still the same but you don't care! Cause your wired man! Don't stop me now cause were having such a good time!

Hi Viv ! Sorry to hear that your day was terrible so far.... **HUG**

I hope things brighten up... and kick your SO in the wossnames to make him fix your Stereo. Works with me every time (Ouch!).

@HLD: "That's not my problem" is an absolute correct statement in your situation. Keep up the good work. ;)

@Sleepy: "Life sucks and then you take a great deal of stimulants and poof it's still the same but you don't care" - Nice philosophy you goit there, may I borrow it :D ?

No worries, it can only get better...

Hey viv, sounds like some of the driving conditions I was dealing with on my way to work this morning.

@HLD, the 1994 Corolla is an absolute champion. I do not drive one personally but have two friends who still drive theirs to this day. My '94 Escort is a champ also. I've had the cash set aside to get a new vehicle, but it's a loyalty thing. Even if the vehicle is embarrasing, it has outperformed any expectations I ever made of it.

Back to Viv and your dreary day. The rain is supposed to let up although it will still be overcast today. The weekend looks promising (nice crisp autumn weather, personally, there is no finer weather) and temps should be in the 70s on monday.

My advice to you is to grab a baseball bat and take out the headlights of the SO vehicle. Then swap tires on the two cars. Finally, remove his stereo, drive to a bestbuy and pay them with his credit card whatever install charges you might accrue for car stereo installation. You will then have several provisions in making the argument that your care is more expensive than his earning that indoor parking spot.

Even though you don't follow football, our beloved vikes are 0-3, I'm just tickled about that. It'll be even funnier to watch them choke to an abysmal seahawks team. but enough about football.

Final advice is to leave work now, go home, crack open a bottle of a nice red, run yourself a bath, disrobe, and turn on the vivcam for the rest of us. :D  :p (smilies inserted here only for you).

Just trying to add a little cheer, it certainly is ugly outside.

It does need the occasional nappy change and feeding thrice daily, but for a man of your skills that should be no problem.

@Viv, what exactly can be done to cheer you up?

Viv,

I can relate to your car trouble with my previous car  and my current car stereo needs some tuning as well ;) - as for the rain, heck, in Belgium it rains 9 days out of ten (slight exaggeration)... so don't let the weather get you down. I hope you feel a bit more relieved, now you've been able to share this horrible experience with us and hope things get better soon :)

I don't beat down well. (This is actually one of my failings) Plus my SO and I have so many other things to fight about, why add this one? :D

I choose to look at this possitively, as I meet interesting people when I walk to and from my car. It's an different sort of neighborhood than the one I grew up in.

No, the thump does not increase with the speed, it is a sporadic thump, I assumed I was imagining it because of that...but then I do only drive the three minutes to and from work. :D

Mine's a 1996 neon, it's cute except for the scrape on the side from those too narrow parking garages...long story...

Awe :) I'm happy for you about your job, I knew you were thinking of leaving :) *hug*

Amazing that we're experiencing similar weather conditions.

LOL!! I don't even know how to do half the things you've listed with my SO's car, but I'll do my best :)

Hmmm...I will think of your suggestion...that would make me happy, but I think it would lead to fired... hmmm...
