Strange but common things

Post by Demis »

After coming to Cyprus for the Easter, i brought with me some RAM to upgrade my pc and make it a little faster. I did that after 2 days cause i was bored to open up the pc. In the meanwhile my pc was working fine until i finally decided to place the ram.

The ram is in place and i start my pc, everything goes fine and i'm at my desktop without any problems (i'm using XP), I decide to connect to the internet and i notice to my surprise that my internal modem is missing   , so i begin troubleshooting the device. I use every little knowledge i have to get the modem to work (change PCI slots, system restore, add new hardware, etc), format is not an option since i did not brougt my backup disk with me and i have no place to save my data. All my efforts lead to a dead end and the modem refuses to work. My guess leads to an IRG confict but i'm not sure, so before i reinstall windows i decide to change PCI slots one more time.

And there i am to my desktop again, (win+pause) and to system properties to check the hardware and there it is, the modem is working properly  .

This and similar strange things have happened to me in the past. I never found out excatly why these problems occyr since either by pure luck? , like the problem above, or format i get to fix them. Strange ...

There is a setting in BIOS called "Reset configuration Data" which is supposed to re-enumerate all of your devices, just turn that on and it will auto set itself on your restart.

I used to have big problems with a Creative Labs Live value card and found i would change the IRQ's every few days, i used the old tick of setting one to ISA and it would reset the cards to slots of their own. I wish i had had this little tool with that Mobo ;)

I still have problems with my CL live player 1024, at least each time i try to change the configuration of my PCI cards :) . Now i strongly believe that "Reset configuration Data" will come in handy, to the point of having thoughts to mess things up a little just to have an answer. :D :D
