This is going to sound really stupid but I started NWN2 for the 2nd time. I only got a few hours of play when I realized needed a new computer. So any way in the interim, I can't figure out how to bash in locked things like doors and chests.

Rightclick and select bash.
This works particularly well with elemental damage on your weapons.

It's always better to unlock through spells or lockpicking though.
