Henchman Crafting Issue

Hi I was wondering if there was a way to keep a weapon in a henchie's inventory without them auto-arming it. I want my one henchie to make a repeater rifle, but everytime I go to put the necessary components in his inventory, the comp decides that the hunting rifle is better than the fancy pistol and arms it. This effectively blocks the crafting, because the game doesn't recognize armed weapons as possible components. Does anyone have a fix or method to work around this? I'd be grateful for any feedback or questions if I've been unclear. Thank you.
