[Excellent story, all. Sorry for my absence, but I got a bit busy and next thing I knew the story had gotten away from me. I think I have it all straight now, and can tie a bit together for you. PM if I include something that contradicts another sub-plot and I’ll fix it ASAP]

Waverly followed the long passage to a forgotten wing of the Gilded Rose’s castle. There, he found the darkened hall where he had been instructed to meet his employers. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he realized they were already here. Several figures in dark robes with single small golden rose visible were present. All also wore an obsidian phoenix pendant. Waverly did his best to look nonplussed and waited for one of them to address him, but instead they began to talk amongst themselves, almost ignoring Waverly in the process.

“He shouldn’t be here, how do I know we can trust him?” “He could betray us to the elders.” “He’s the only one with the skill to move freely among them” “I can control him.”

Finally the bickering ended and Waverly was addressed by one of the figures. “I thought they would come seeking diplomacy? They destroyed the token you gave them and massacred our brethren. If the elders of the order find out about the ceremony we are all doomed. They will know we have awakened the old learning, and all will be for naught.”

Waverly responded, “On the positive side, they are reckless and violent. You will now have no problem convincing the mainstreamers of the order that they could pose a danger. Our plans are still quite secret to all outsiders, including the elders and those knights of your order who would blanche at the arcane knowledge. But lest you forget, it is *our* plan, and not your own.”

Another robed figure spoke, “Yes, their violent foray into our lands, and the evidence of debauchery and cruelty were received quite coldly by the others. Armed conflict will not be far off. We will then gather all the pieces of the puzzle necessary….” At this, his words were cut off by a deeper and more sinister voice, “and rise to power over both orders of sanctimonious fools as the immortals we were meant to be

Waverly shuddered at what plans these people had once successful, but the riches and the thoughts of immortality had him so enchanted that he was almost unaware of his own actions.

A robed figure spoke again, “The armory has been visited. A large ‘diplomatic’ party of Gilded Rose knights is to set out for the north tomorrow. They will be authorized to engage the enemy if provoked. Waverly you must be ready, the rest of us will be doing our parts as well…”

{Ah yes, well, *ahem* back to the story :rolleyes: ;) }

Loner woke early, before dawn, and rose quietly. She found Kramo still sleeping peacefully, and smiled, hoping he was at least beginning to come to terms with his past...She stole silently out of the room.

She noticed that Georgi's door was open, and the room empty. Getting an uneasy feeling, she went in, and found a piece of parchment on the bed.

She nearly woke the entire Copper Coronet when she yelled: "Aw...no...no no no NO!!!! I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE &$%^&#$# KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!"...

Hearing Loner shouting, Kramo bolted out of bed. Grabbing his sword, he ran into Georgi's room. Loner standing there, holding a piece of parchment. Loner, looked like she didn't whether to kill something or cry. Kramo, took the note from her hand. After reading it, he handed it to the others for them to read.
"Where do you think she went?"

Loner was startled by Kramo's sudden appearance. "Oh...forgive my...my language," she said. "I'm so sorry I woke you..."

She sighed deeply. She felt the tears forming in her eyes. "Where has she gone? Ha! That seems to be the big question recently, doesn't it? What I'd like to know is, why do we all keep running off? That's what I'd like to know...We all know damn well that there's some force trying to split us up, and we keep playing right into its hands, don't we?..."

She stopped, trying to collect herself. "I'm sorry," she said again. "Well...there's not much to do here anymore, except wait for Vivien, and someone can stay to do that...I'm going to set out."

Just then Mazzy spoke up. "I'll come with you," she said. "I've had word that my friends have arrived in Trademeet and I want to meet with them."

Loner addressed everyone: "Whoever wishes to come with us, come along. I think it's best we all travel together as much as we can..."

She looked at Kramo. "I would love to have you with me, as always, if you're willing, and strong enough to travel..."

{OOC: *sigh*...}

"WAIT!!" cried Loner, taking the note from Kramo's hand. "There's writing on the back of this, I didn't NOTICE IT BEFORE { ;) }." She read aloud:

"I am grateful for all the times you have saved my life; but if I suspect any of you of following me, I will not hesitate in taking it myself."

Loner collapsed onto a nearby chair, shaing her head mutely. Kramo laid a hand on her shoulder. The entire room stood silent. Mazzy, poised at the door, was the first to speak:

"I hope you don't mind, I'll be heading to Trademeet anyway, to meet the Trueswords. I will not risk actively looking for Georgi, but if I come across her...I will do what I can, and send you all word." Then she left.

Dragon Wench asked to see the note as well , "AW !@#$%^&," she vociferated rather violently. She understood why their friend had run off, and she wanted to respect her decision, but she also knew that these separations would equally imperil them. She studied the others. Loner and Kramo were huddled close together (very closely, she thought to heself recalling Loner's odd behaviour the night before), Jennabard was visibly upset, while Dark Poet and Gwalchmai appeared ready to kill somebody. They were all so thunderstruck by Georgi's abrupt disappearance that they were aware of little else. Then, quite unexpectedly a voice spoke from the bed, "I think that she also has a past, and she feels that certain elements.....would be a threat to us all...." They started and looked at Vivien. Her skin was once again clear and luminescent, and she appeared fully recovered from her possession. The grouped crowded around the bed and hugged their friend (Aw....). After a time, Dragon Wench spoke. "We need to remain together, something tells me that if we don't disaster will befall us, let us all accompany Mazzy to Trademeet, and on the way we can decide what to do about Georgi, and try to determine where she might be."

"The only way to NOT imperil us is to face these things head-on and deal with them," said Loner rather weakly. "That's one thing that wizard's tests taught me." She sighed. "Is everyone even strong enough to travel?...If so I will arm and be ready instantly."

It appeared that the entire group was ready to travel, including Vivien. Hastily they left the Copper Coronet with the intention of joining forces with Mazzy and her friends (is this ok? not too sure where we're headed here). As they sped towards Trademeet, Dragon Wench worriedly asked Loner what she thought they should do about Georgi.

Loner shook her head. "To tell you the truth, DW, I'm completely at a loss. I have no doubt she's serious about that suicide threat...I just don't know what to do..."

Just then, a figure in black approached them, on horseback. "Hold!" the figure cried. Everyone did, but Loner asked "Why should we hold for you, friend?"

It was then they were close enough to see the emblem of the Gilded Rose emblazoned on the stranger's cloak.

"You have the bearing of a party I've been sent to find," he began. "I am from the Noble Order of the Gilded Rose."

"Mmm," said Loner. "Tell us...been to any binding rituals lately?"

"What?"

"We know," said Vivien. "There's no need to try and deny it." Then she and the others explained all they had found out, thinking to trap the knight, or scare him into making a confession or revealing some information.

But he did nothing of the kind. His face was clouded. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said earnestly. "Our Order is a holy brotherhood, dedicated to the cause of righteousness. There have been tensions with the Radiant Heart, but we are not evil. I have seen naught but goodness in my bretren since I became a novice. And we have no Duergar in our Order. That would be equal to having Drow among us. Abhorrent!!"

"Are you a novice still?" asked Loner, suspicions beginning to take shape.

"I am," he replied.

Loner turned to the others. "I think there is much more to this Order than anyone knows about, including their own members." She turned back to the knight. "Listen to me," sha said: "Do not go back to your Order. They are not what they seem. Go to the High Hall of the Radiant Heart in Athkatla. Tell them we sent you, ask for Sir Ryan Trawl or Sir Keldorn, tell them what you've told us, and ask them to come to Trademeet as soon as they can. Can you do that?"

The knight was indignant. "I will not take orders from such as you!!"

"It's your funeral," said Loner; then turning to the others, "We have to get to Trademeet as soon as we can."

Dragon Wench was pleased that Loner concurred with her about the name of the "Gilded Rose." She had thought that her imagination and tendency to overanalyse things were getting the better of her. "We need to think about this," she said, "it could be vital."

Arriving at Trademeet was not a happy event. For one thing, the town's citizens somehow having recieved word of the developing hostilities had started to prepare for an attack. The once attractive town was beginning to ressemble a garrison. "I hope that they understand we're not behind these events'" said Dragon Wench uneasily. "We need to go to Mazzy's house immediately."
Mazzy greeted them with a grim expression and said, "I don't know how, but somebody seems to have been spreading stories about the Harem, and everyone is very afraid.....and you know what these people are like when they feel threatened...."

"We have protected this town!" cried Loner, indignant. "I can't believe any of this is happening!"

There was a knock at the door, and when Mazzy answered, an armed halfling stood in the doorway. "Come and see what you think of our little group, Mazzy," he said smiling.

Loner and some of the others followed Mazzy to the edge of the town, and stood amazed at the spectacle before them: a veritable army of halfling warriors, footsoldiers and cavalry on pony-back. They were surprisingly ferocious-looking. Loner didn't know whehter to laugh or salute.

"Well, we've gathered some who ah...aren't Trueswords," said Mazzy's friend; "but they are fierce in combat and were willing to help any way they can. Hope you don't mind Mazzy."

Mazzy sighed. "For once, I don't have a choice," she replied. "Now we must wait for Ryan and Keldorn..."
