Originally posted by Minerva I can't believe how the graphic improved ever since. With Exult, though, I can run the game with 800x600 resolution while the original was 320x200! (I think) I run it on 400x300, as higher the resolution the wider I can see, which is kinda cheat (ish). And the music! LMAO
It may have been 640x480, and was one of the few games at the time to deliver that with 256 colors. Needed special access to expanded memory for it, too, hence that memory driver of theirs which was incompatible with what eventually became the norm. Now, if you want 320x200 with 256 colors, check out Betrayal at Krondor. When I return to Windows and 1078x768 afterwards, I feel like I'm looking at ants.
And yes, the music was silly as hell. Garriott never did have much of an ear for it. Can you hum Rule Brittania in your sleep, yet?

I turned off the music. After while, it gets to my nerve, I'm afraid.
I thought it was 640x480, too, as that was my computer setting at the time, but the Exult original setting is 320x200 and that the image I remember from the time I bought the game long time ago.
I just left the Trinsic.

It's a real shame Garriott was so devoted to pushing the technical envelope, instead of improving whatever model he was using. But they tell me he felt like his final choices in game design were always perfection; and how can you improve on perfection? At least they got out the two major Ultima VII products and those attractive "Worlds of Ultima" side products (which used the same engine in other worlds) before abandoning largely non-linear RPGs for linear action games.
Did you ever play Serpent Isle? It didn't feel as massive or original as The Black Gate, but it was still fun.

I haven't got Serpent Isle. I didn't know there's more than one game available to "add-on" that time. I have no patches, and had no internet access to ask for help. I didn't know there's something called "forums" to ask questions...
