You should be able to install any type of RAM, so PC100 or 133 should be okay

It will only run as fast as your slowest speed of memory though.

Actually i thought of something, if you right click on My cumputer --> Properties --> Performance --> File System --> Troubleshooting you can turn off 32 bit device drivers, try that, then when you load you should have CD Rom support, just remember to turn that back on when you have re installed

Win98 SE didn't cause much trouble until now, so I never thought of upgrading it. But, computers here are running Win ME, and they are running smoothly. I will think about it.

I can't even send emails from home now. It's annoying! I have to sort out by weekend, or I have nothing to do on Sunday...

UPDATE: Nothing to update...

because there's no change!

My computer recognizes CD-ROM while in Windows, but doesn't in MS-DOS mode. I need it to reinstall Win98.

According to the Troubleshooting, I should check "autoexec.dos" and "config.dos" to find the lines containing MSCDEX to copy them into "autoexec.bat" and "config.sys" respectively. However, I can't find them anywhere!

Windows recognize CD-ROM, when I start in the normal mode (that's an improvement, actually...), but what can I do from here?

As i said previously you should have a DOS drivers CD with your CD-RWm look for that

Go to explorer if possible, then click D: (or whatever the CD ROM drive letter is) you should see a little setup icon, try that, then follow it through

UPDATE: Connection from home!!

At last! I'm posting from home, though I had to connect Online Express first to get internet connection. Explorer didn't connect itself... Why?

Also, the computer refused to recognize it has a CD-RW. Each time I try, it goes blue screen with "fatal error" messages.

Anyway, I will take my computer tomorrow the university's computer centre, which kindly offered me to look into it. If it doesn't work, I shall have a great fun reformatting and reinstalling everything from scratch during this weekend...

UPDATE: No more connection from home...

It froze after 10 minutes and now I cannot access to GB, even though I can connec to the internet. Windows doesn't like me to do something different, I think...

I HAD ENOUGH!! And I believe so do everyone else to hear from me about my mad computer. Therefore, I decided to reformat, then reinstall everything from scratch.

Thank you all for the kindly advice. I hope I can speak to you soon, even after I go ahead with reformatting from this evening...

I rescued a bit of unreplaceable staff, like my thesis, old essays, saved games (very important

I don't know what's the matter with the CD... It doesn't automatically start (I have checked the connection and jumper switch), and the "My Computer" doesn't open. Both time, I get blue screen with fatal error messages.

So, I am going to exchange my old hard drive, as my new drive is faster (as you know), run FDISK, reformat, maybe add another memory, then reinstall.

Is this the right order?

Since you are going to scrap current setup and reinstall then the my computer issues don't matter too mcuh

Sounds almost like something malicious though.

Well you can't really go wrong re-formatting, F Disk and format the old one fist then add the second one and F Disk that, it is pretty self explanatory, hope if goes well

I could run through it all in PM if you wish

Why should I run Fdisk on the old one first? I mean, the new one will be the master drive, so deal with it first. Or both together...

@Minerva, I would recommend you do your reformatting and install windows from your start up disk with your old CDRom in place. Once this is done, replace your CDRW and use the add new hardware option in control panel
