@at99 - didn't I read somewhere once that you were a teacher? I might be mistaken...but I was wondering - if it is true - whether you find you can achieve anything with your students when patronising in debates? If I am wrong regarding your profession, I apologise - but do you honestly not believe that we can be humble enough to learn from those younger than ourselves as well as those older?...
If your intentions were not to open yourself to learning other points of view, then I question your motives for posting this topic in the first place, when you yourself have admitted to understanding the volatile - and sometimes blinkered - nature of such a personal issue...
Just because peoples' opinions differ it does not make them wrong...

Is it OK to question religion?
I don't think so, Ysh. You gotta draw a line somewhere in the sand. What about people who believe that some races are inferior to other races, and should be treated so? What about those who think it morally justified to murder in the name of religion? What about people who hold to the opinion that wives must submit to their husbands in everything? Opinions differ, this is true, but like beliefs they are not equal in truth, and certain truths are "truer" than others... in my opinion.Originally posted by Yshania:

@Eminem, I don't get the feeling Ysh is writing that all viewpoints are necessarily right or equal--only that a viewpoint which differs is not automatically incorrect. Many issues we are given to perceive as simple by our leaders our in fact very complex, and can provide totally distinct and mutally contradictory solutions if we emphasize different parts of the equation.Originally posted by EMINEM:

And no, I'm not denying what you said, either. Only pointing out that Ysh probably meant something different.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Fable- thanks for your more eloquent elaboration
My opinion was that just because we are discussing different religions, no-one should be excluded on the basis that their opinions don't agree...
I normally only lurk these discussions, but was just a little concerned that it seemed to be deteriorating into questioning as to whether someone even had a right to an opinion...
