Do you have the latest iPod updater installed? If so, you could try using a different USB port, or the firewire connection. If that doesn't work, try plugging it directly into an electrical socket and resetting it. Good luck!

I figured it out.
In case anyone has the same problem I had, I went into the ipod's options and chose "automatically updated Ipod" instead of "selected playlists only", and checked a box "only update checked songs".
