I'd suggest not simply throwing summoned creatures at the SD, but separating them out, moving them around, so that it has to take as long as possible to dispatch each one individually. That should allow your mage(s) and cleric(s) to cast as many spells as possible in the meantime, both offensive ones, and defensive over your tanks.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
1. The high level summons (demons and such) are gated instead of conjured, I think they can't be wiped out by a Death Spell just like that. (Are skeleton warriors with their immense resistance always insta-killed by a Death Spell as well?) So if you have a high level mage or a handful of scrolls...
2. What personally bothers me a lot is that when some characters give you an item as part of a quest (the Shadow Wardstone, for example) and if the character they are given to don't have space in their inventory, the game makes some space for the item by dropping one of the items you were holding, usually the one in the upper left corner. You do get an 'I had to drop your trinket' or 'your item is on the ground' kind of warning, but they are not that hard to miss... Has screwed me over more than once, at least...

SD has death spell and leveldraining breath IIRC. Skeleton warriors should ignore the first, but would be affected by the latter. Negative plane protection or spell abjuration necromancy may help. On a sidenote: I managed to disintegrate the SD twice so far (I know it's quite unlikely and both times I ended up somewhere between laughing and disapointment).

Good answers to 1; thanks.
I kicked his reptilian ass anyway. The summonses probably saved me from that breath, which sounds scary. For some reason I never thought of holding them elsewhere then sending 'em in in waves. Indeed I am a hamster of very little brain.
What about question 2? Does chaos make you spray magic items around like confetti? Will they still be there if I go back and look for them? I note that you never seem to lose your Note from Mazzy Fentan or Annoying Bit of Red Cloth or Potion of Dullness but always something rather groovy

Enigmatic as ever! If it's not the spell, what is it??
Well, I've cleaned out the planar sphere in the meantime. Oh how we enjoyed pasting Tolgerias. T'was was particularly gratifying to get the timing of Breach and Summon Insects just absolutely right, so that his spell protection came down an instant before the swarm hit him.
I went back to search the Harpers' Guildhall but found nothing. I think my Drinker is history.
Such a pity as it's groovy to heal while you hurt.
So anyway, Valygar has servied his purpose and has gone back to his cabin to sulk. I decided it was now time for Chapter 3.
However, a couple more questions if anyone cares to respond:
1) I've just turned 12th level kensai; should I dual at 13 or wait till 14?
2) How do you get into the Guarded Compound in the Temple District? I can't seem to find an entrance anywhere.
thanks

There should be an entrance to the sewers somewhere around there and right next to it is the door to the compound.

Feel free to chasten me if this is spam, but I'm feeling creative this morning and have a couple of ultra-naive questions.
SPOILERS
Thanks for that. I found the door, kind of hidden behind the wall so you couldn't actually see it, and crashed that party.
What a great combat! Some nice summonses to contend with first. Nalia peppered her jodhpurs when she saw a Nishruu, but fortunately it went down quickly and a Zone of Sweet Air dealt with the smell. But upstairs it really got interesting. I couldn't figure out how my fighters kept getting stunned until I'd won and identified Celestial Fury. Cool. Now I know what my next weapon proficiency slot will be!
First attempt, only me, Aerie and Nalia survived. I considered raising the others, but remembered that it breaks the romance. (You'd have thought that Jaheira would be more grateful for bringing her back from the dead, but no. Again, women remain a mystery to me, and that one in particular. I underline my mental note to remain a mystery to them.) So I reloaded and redid the combat, feeling like a cheesy cheeseman who hasn't bathed in a week.
We tidied up a few other loose ends in Athkatla then decided to join with the Shadow Thieves and make like a Vampire Pest Control Agency. On the way, I hit 13th level, so I dualled to Thief. Never played a thief before and have a couple of really naive questions I'd appreciate some help with.
The first problem was that my party was looking tank-lite, so we ditched Yoshimo again and picked up a foul-mouthed dwarf called Korgan. Just once I would like to meet a polite dwarf who doesn't sound like he comes from a run-down housing estate in Glasgow.
However, true to the stereotype, Korgan proves himself pretty handy with his mits and is soon slicing and dicing his way through Bodhi's lair. He and Jaheira make quite a handy team.
This game is so true to life, isn't it? Like how in RL RPGs, no matter how many cunning stunts the players pull, certain NPCs always seem to manage to escape because they're needed in the plot elsewhere, oops er I mean they have some spooky power which enables them to escape. Oh, and also how your character can suddenly get struck by lightning for no apparent reason (see Thunder Storms thread)...
So we report back to Aran, and also finish off Mae-Var for good measure. He and his cronies go down depressingly easily (two simultaneous fireballs and there's only one of them left standing). And the barman died as soon as I walked in the door! My charisma's not the best, but surely it's not that bad.
There's not much left to do now in Athkatla, but things suddenly start to get interesting with Jaheira. I get the feeling that the Harper stuff is going to come to a head soon and am wondering if I should hang about or head off to Spellhold.
My silly questions:
1) Was 13 the right level to dual?
2) How DO you backstab?? Tried clicking the stealth fella, Hide in Shadows successful, then as soon as I try to clobber anyone I'm "Leaving Shadows"
3) Should I hang out in Athkatla until the romance is finished? The idea of bucketloads of xp is rather attractive as it may put me close to regaining my Kensainess.
4) I can't find Kamir the paladin in the graveyard. Have I missed the boat on that one?
thanks

There is no entrance to Guarded Compaund in the sewers. The entrance is in the street - you just can not see it. Hunt the pixels!
2) How DO you backstab?? Tried clicking the stealth fella, Hide in Shadows successful, then as soon as I try to clobber anyone I'm "Leaving Shadows"
You are doing everything rigth. While you are "leaving shadows" your thief will have time for one or to strikes. If he actually hits the target - they will be backstabs
3) Should I hang out in Athkatla until the romance is finished? The idea of bucketloads of xp is rather attractive as it may put me close to regaining my Kensainess.
I always hated to leave Athkatla without proper romance ending - no one really knows what bugs can await you in those chapters. One time I spoiled Aerie romance because of it, so now I never begin Chapter 4 without romance ending. To speed up the romance you can use console.
4) I can't find Kamir the paladin in the graveyard. Have I missed the boat on that one?
He is near the Unearthed Grave in the north of the Graveyard.

(1) 13 is a great level to dual- it really depends on how you like to play. The earliest you would want to do dual would be 9. If you don't mind waiting a while longer, 12 is good. Some people like 13 because you get an extra attack/rd. I waited until 15 once- I don't know if I'd do it again because it takes forever to get to 16 as a theif. Your PC should be pretty beefy because you waited until 13.
(2) Yeah, you are doing everything right to backstab. You have to leave shadows to attack. Make sure you are using a weapon you can backstab with; you can only use theif weapons to backstab (dagger, staff, etc.), even if you can equip other items, via UAI, etc. What I am really trying to say is don't daydream about backstabbing with Carsomyr
(3) The Jaheira romance is a lesson in patience- using the console is good advice

Thanks guys/gals.
So, backstab isn't working because my THACO blows. Garn. I was already dreaming about backstabbing a lich with Daystar.
It sounds like it would be wise to get the romance done and dusted before setting sail. I really, really don't want to pockle it, so I might have a go at Kangaxx and the Twisted Rune to pass the time and get some more XP.
Now it's me that needs a change of trousers.
Don't worry about that, IIRC liches can't be backstabbed anyway.

I believe all undead couldn't be backstabbed... or maybe it was in PnP 2nd edition.
Anyway, backstabbing is targetting (from behind) a vital organ of the target (Hearth, Lung, etc.)... since Undead doesn't have/need their organs (I think Zombies might have a rotten heart somewhere... not sure if they need it do live), you can't backstabb them.

You can still hit them from behind, but you don't get the bonus damage you get from attacking living creatures. Major bummer, there, but that's the way the cookie (skeleton) crumbles.

Thanks for the info. I suppose it makes sense.
* begins to regret dualling *
The problem it gives me is that the only weapon I have that's capable of hitting Kangaxx is the Daystar, and the only character with proficiency in long sword is my Thief.
So, does anyone know what the non-proficiency penalties are for Keldorn?

Daystar counts as a +2 weapon when determining what it can hit IIRC, even if it gives you a +4 bonus to the dice throw. Kangaxx is very picky about weapons and wants at least a +4 in order to acknowledge any hit whatsoever...
Yoinks! Thanks for the heads-up on that. Flame Tongue it is then (hits as a +4 methinks).
That one will do, as will Staff of Rynn. A scroll of Protection from Magic is highly recommended when it comes to Demi-Lich slaying.
