It's an excellent piece of plot by Bioware. Instead of doing a straight good-evil choice of aliegence, you're forced to side with people you don't like.

Then they cop-out, by making the thieves "nice guys" under threat from "great evil." I mean FFS, Aran Linvail is True Neutral!
