@Lazarus, this is a thread to state examples of politicians who, in a single person's opinion, stand up courageously for their principles on a regular basis; politicians who buck what we rightly think of when the word "politician" comes to mind. It's not for arguing about the choices we put up--though I'll eliminate that phrase "squeaky clean" from the first post, since it obscures my intent. As you've pointed out, none are saints, and all have had to bespatter themselves with mud (those, at least, who aren't drenched in it) simply to advance in the political machine. But some have proved to be individuals willing to fight selflessly for their ideals even when times and political climate have changed against them, and I find this in Kennedy. In that sense, he is a paladin, different but similar to Jeffords, striving always to floow the dictates the conscious over the decades in office against the tide of political power.Originally posted by Lazarus
So how does Kennedy fit in with that “squeaky clean” ideal? I’m pretty much opposed to his policies, but even if I weren’t, I don’t think I could term him in any way a “Paladin,” and then mention Chappaquidic in the next sentence!
If you would like to argue his choice with me, we can always form a separate thread, but I'd like this one to keep its positive focus on "politicians you can respect."
