It is, after all, done in dialog with him.
It also gives him some order, partially resolving his torment. Though it can never fully be resolved, he is a rogue forever.

I can think of one good reason to advance as much as you can before you finish the game: not because you need to fight anyone, but because having high stats--especially Wisdom and Charisma--can give you more dialogue options. There are about a dozen different endings to the game, give or take. If you want to see them all, having high stats will help.
Don't forget that items and tattoos can give you extra stat points. So can dialogues, especially if you have played the game a certain way. For example, the more lawful you are (that is, the more lawful options you have chosen in previous dialogues), the more Strength points you'll get when you have a special conversation with Vhailor. You might have noticed that the more sucking up you did to Ravel, the more Wisdom points you got when she showed you the secrets of the universe. See, it made a difference. One of the best things about PS:T is that actions have consequences, unlike most other games. Call it karma or great scripting; either way, the experience is very refreshing.
